FREIGHT RATES

Byers large business industry Baa a Rate fice, on its pay-
toll: Practically every progressive Chamber of Commerce of
cities and towns has realized the importance of employing a
Rate Expert.

The Bureau of Markets has employed Mr. B. B. Cheek to give
borat in Georgia service as a Rate Expert on fre'ght and ex-
press rates, On ali shipments of merchandise where the far-
mer thinks that his charges have been excessive, send copy of
freight bill to this office, addressed to B. B. Cheek, Rate Ex-
pert, Department of Agriculture. An investigation will be
made on the charges, and if an overcharge is made, a claim
will be filed for the shipper. This covers ned freight and ex-
press rates. ae

If any farmers of the state wish advice as to the cheapest
rate to secure where there are several lines that can make the
haul, this office will also. give you the information. It often
occurs that the freight and express rates on some articles are
_ unreasonable when compared with the rates on other articles,

_ _WINTER PLANTING

ow vegetables ean be planted
with the assurance of maturity
during December.

Many small gardeners plant a
variety of vegetables during the;
winter months, taking a chance
on weather conditions, ete., with
he possible loss of the cost of seed
and very little labor, if conditions
are not favorable for full maturi-|
ty of plantings.

South Georgias climate is more
avorable than the climate of
rth Georgia to successful late
antings, and many truckers as
well as small gardeners in South
Georgia make successful ventures
with late plantings that _ bring}
good money returns.
easonable plantings for Decem-

r according to the State College
Agriculture are as follows:
ENGLISH PEAS: Plant 1 1-2)
0, 2 inches deep, rows 2 1- 2 to 8
feet; 4 to 6 inches in the drill.
One pint to 1 quart for 100 feet;

PARORL POST AND PLANT
INSPECTION

_ In response to a number of re-
quests for information relative to
the Federal and State laws gov-
erning the inspection and_ ship-
ment of plants and plant products,
we publish this summary, begin-
ning with the postal | law govern-
ing such shipments:

ducts, including all field- -grown
florists stock, trees, shrubs, vines.

other plants and plant products

etable and flower seeds, bedding
plants, and other herbeceous
plants, bulbs and roots, may be ad-

| mitted to the mails only when ac-

companied with a certificate from

| to the effect that the nursery or|
premises from which such stock is

shipped has been inspected within
a year and found free from inju-
rious insects and plant diseases,
and the parcel containing such
stock is plainly marked to show
the nature of the contents and the

name and address of the sender.

(Sec. 467, Postal Hwa: and Regu-
lations.) ??
We have enipuacized those pro-

| duets which do not require an in-

spection certificate. The state
laws, however, require that sweet
potato plants, narcissus and Chi-
nese lily bulbs be inspected.
Nursery stock and plant pro-
duets which require a certificate
of inspection of premises, and do

|not earry such certificate, may be

offered for mailing through termi-
nal inspeetion points, if the pack-
age is plainly marked to show con-
tents, and is accompanied by suf-
ficient postage to carry it to the
nearest terminal inspection point,
and thence to its destination.

The Federal and state laws are
in general accord on this subject |
and, as shown above, certain
classes of products may be shipped
without restriction. However, the

difficulty of examination and mis- |

branding make it impractical for
postal employees to discriminate
in handling these packages, which
has resulted in the practice of for-
warding nearly all plant ship-
ments through terminal inspection
points located at Atlanta, Albany
and Savannah.

While these regulations may
eek a hardship on the shipper
of small quantities, the disadvan-

|tage is small compared to the}

value derived from rigid observ
ence of these laws designed to con-
trol plant diseases and pests.

Space in the Bulletin is: Lmited, and the number of adverti-

to each, which is the only right and fair way. .

If Mrs. Mary Jones.advert:ses flowers for sale, we sce no

advantage to her in slightly changing the wording and again

aoe these same flowers, in the same issue, in the name

Some advertisers in their zeal to secure advertis: ng space

saat to repeat the same advertisement in the name of each

_ ehild in the family, each giving the same post.office address

We resitate to adopt any measure of stopping this unfair
