So STOP SELLING HOGS AT PRESENT PRICES

I have just vdocined a report of a sale where four car lots of |
hogs brought the following prices:

No. 1$7.35. No. 2$6.85. No; 3$5.35. Ronehs 66: ab:

The two hams and the two middlings, well cured, out of any
one of these hogs, will bring more next apne than the entire.
hog brought you.

I think that this low slump in the eke has been brought
about by rushing hogs on the market. You can keep this meat.

_at home just as cheap as the large packers can keep it in the
city. They have to pay higher rent on the buildings that they
keep it stored in. Their refrigeration and handling costs them
- something.and when they are getting more than they need for,
_ their immediate use, they make you pay for these expenses
with a large margin of profit added to them. If you will slack
up for about.a month selling your hogs you will get. more for
them. I hope that no Georgia farmer is selling. off his hogs
now at any such prices as the above, with the expectation of
buying his meat on credit next spring. If he is, dont talk
hard timesjust talk plain foolishness.

Corn is going too cheap. We are having ee list corn
with us as cheap as 75 cents per bushel -delivered. This price

~

is netting the farmers on an average of about 60 or 65 cents |

for his eorn. Hold your eorn, if possible. The crop is short in

the great Middle West. I hope that no farmer is selling his

corn at any such price as the one given, expecting to buy his

meal on a credit next year. If such is the case, this particular

brother farmer need not talls fat timesjust talk plain fool-

_- Ishness.
On Page 6 you will find 2 ek of grades and habaecds that

have been adopted by the Bureau of Markets to govern quota-
These are the

Federal grades as fav as practical. This may look like foolish-

ness to the farmer back home who handles nothing but fresh |

eges. But in the cities where eggs are kept on cold storage for

as long asa year, grading does make a difference to the buyer.

Competition is also keen in the egg market and they talk qual-
ity on eggs just as much as they do price.

. The Pure Food Department, this week, eaught several ip fe
ments of eggs from California that were being sold in Georgia

as fresh yard eggs. These were eggs that had been treated
chemically and placed on cold storage for months.
up well in color and appearance.
But when cooked they have a stale taste. The
cook would, at first, think it was the fault of the grease. But,
in reality, it was due to the ege being anywhere from 8. to

10 months old. : 2
This practice Sit no danger continue in Georgia and they

will be compelled to. label hee chemically noe eold storage
eggs.
