ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, JULY 26, 1928. ae NUMBER 36.
LAYING-BY TIME
About. th's time of the year all of us farmers begin to talk
about laying-by. As a rule the rains iay-by for us.
Near:y every farmer will advise the other farmers that if
he goes in and cleans ovt his cotton after a rainy spell of about
two or three weeks duration, that it will hurt it by knocking
off bol's and skinning up the cotton. Personally I have found
that it always pays to thoroughly clean your eotton. If it does
not make it take on more fruit it enables you to gather what
you have made. You cannot hire hands to pick grassy cotton.
They will start in it but they will quit on you pretty soon and
tell all of the other cotton pickers in the section about it. If
there ar any sand spurs in it the only way you will get it
picked is to pick it yourself. The best paying work that you
can give your cotton now is to thorough'y elean it before you
et 1h:
Of course you can not afford to go in and work your corn
after a rainy spell and:a lepse of two or three weeks from the
last ploughing. If you do t will ruin your corn. Everyone hates -
- to see so much vegetation in the corn but you can take advan-
= = =
tage of this growth of grass and weeds in your corn by. turning
your little pigs in it, if it is fenced in. If it is not fenced off it
might pay you to fence off a patch of it for your pigs. Little.
pigs w ll not hurt your corn or any other erops and this is a
vood time of the year to get them started. Hogs are bringing a
good price. They brought a good price last fall until the middle
of the winter. Rush your hogs and try to have them number
Ones by the October and November sa.es. Immediate attention
to them will put on three pounds to one if you wait until Oc-
tober to try to get them in a thrifty condition.
Now is the time to think about your winter grain erops. If
you have a good spot of ground somewhere some wheat: would
come in good. In most of the sections in Georgia, north of Ma-
con, flour mills are fairly convenent and any- of the red clay
soils, thoroughty fertilized, will make 20 to 25 bushels of. wheat
to the acre. Home grown biscuit are mighty good for the table.
The shorts and bran are fine for the pigs and the whole wheat
is a spendid feed for your chickens. We do not raise enough
wheat in Georgia.

GOOD FUTURE PROBABLE FOR
SPECIALIZED EGG FARMING
Specialized egg farming has been
an outstanding development in Amer-
MARKET BULLETIN
ican agriculture since the war. It has
become an important: factor 1n egg
production. Poultry had been one o
the Nations largest but least organ-
ized agricultural industries. Although
9 farmers out of 10 kept. pou
few paid attention to the individual
hen. Accordingly onditions -were
very favorable for specialized egg
farming. Eggs and poultry were re-
latively higher in price than dairy
products, meat animals, and other
farm commodities, and feed prices
favored the poultrymen. fan
Another stimulus was the fact that
little capital was needed to get
started in the business, and returns
were not long delayed. The business
.ccordingly had a tremendous growth.
Originally developed in the vicinty
of large cities to supply the local
markets, specialized: egg farming in
some sections increased its output
beyond the requirements of the near-
by population. Mainly. through co-
operative effort, however, wider mar-
kets were obtained. This resulted in
the development of specialized egg-
farming communities, which are lo-
cated principallv on the Pacific coast.
Despite the rapid expansion of
the business, specialized egg farming
remains a minor factor in the total
production of eggs in the, United
States. Farm flocks still account for
about 85 per cent of our annual, egg
crop. :
The United States Department of
Agriculture believes, however, that
a good future for specialized egg
farming is probable. Specialized poul-
trymen can not expect to survive the
competition of the small farm flock
if they follow ordinary flock meth-
ods and practices.
however, that they understand the
requirements of their business better
than to do that. The more successful
of them realize that the specialized
poultry industry must produce spec-
ial quality eggs and find a market
for them at special prices. It must. al-
so maintain not only a high average
annual egg production but a high
production in the season when the
best eggs are scarce. rae
PULLETS ARE VICTIMS OF
PATRIOTIC DEVIL CHASERS
Devil chasers were convicted of
the mysterious deaths. of a dozen
pullets on a Virginia farm shortly
after the Fourth of July last year
when pathologists of the United
States Department of Agriculture
made a laboratory examination of
one of the dead birds. Fireworks,
| therefore, are now listed among the
numerous causes of poultry losses
against which the department urges
precautionary measures.
Phosphorus poisoning was sus-
pected when the examination of the
laboratory specimen. disclosed a
smoky vapor pouring out from
among. the contents of the gizzard.
The odor of phosphorus was very
evident, and in a dark room the es-
capinge vapor was luminous.
Subsequent detective work. re-
vealed the fact that on the Fourth
of. July the farmers children had ex-
ploded a number of devil chasers
in the driveway where the pullets
were in the habit of picking up sharp
gravel. The devil chasers* were
flat brownish cakes about the size of
a 25-cent piece and contained phos-
phorus. The unexploded fragments
of the fireworks were probably swal-
lowed by the pullets in the course of
several davs after the childrens cele-
bration. The poisoning action was
delayed somewhat by the fact that
the phosphorus was mixed with a
hard substance that was not readily
soluble.
Veterinarians, says the department
would do well to bear in mind the
findings in this case when called up-
on to make a diagnosis of the cause
of death of poultry in cases sugges-
tive of poisoning, particularly just
after Independence Day celebration.
