= Marketing Surplus Farm Products
catiaboot
r
|
Condensed statement of speech at State College of Ag-
riculture :
_ Good quality and a standard pack eliminates to, some ex-
tent surplus farm commodities. The surplus can never be com-
|| * pletely eliminated. In apples we have culls; in peaches we
|} have culls. These apples and these peaches are just as good
as the fruit that is sold, if used at the right stage of ma-
~ turity. They will-not go into the market and sell on account
| of their appearance. The best disposition of this surplus fruit
| is to manufacture it into saleable products, such as vinegar,
jelly, and extracts. Dried fruit also is a prof.table way to
take care of this surplus. You cannot afford to ship a surplus
farm commodity in its gross form. These two fruits con-
densed can be shipped and sold at a profit in many parts
of the world. .
It is up to the business men of the State to see that the -
proper factories are here to handle the surplus of these two
fruits.
A. surplus of the staple crops: such as cotton, corn and
_- live stock. cannot be handled in gross form. We need manu-
facturing plants to hendle these commodities here at home
without shipping them across the Unted States o be manu-
factured and shipped back to us and to other parts of the
world: Jf they are manufactured here at home, the money
1S expended in Georgia and the FC ceDy. we them will also,
come into Georgia. =
The farmer has not been asleep on the job. The business
men have been too busy telling the farmer how to farm and. -
not busy enough themselves to bandle the farm . products
_ profitably for Georgia after they are produced by the farmer.
Georgia has never gone after her foreign markets as,
she should. A few hundred: dollars spent in South America,
Canada, Mexico, and across the ocean would open lines of .
trade that would bring millions of dollars into our State.
The expend ture of $265.00 by the Bureau of Markets re-
opened the trade relations: with t the pe ckers of Cuba and the
hog raisers of Georgia.
In changing from our one crop for money in Georgia,
which has been cotton. to a general diversified farm program,
the business men of our: State wll have to wake up and
stop thinking nfterms of the plongh and a store.
