MAKE THE LAND RICH AND
Next to the man, fhe most phar factor i in making a suc-
- eessful farm is the land.
The Georgia farmer is suffering from poverty of the soil.
He has harvested the fertility from his land, sold it in fe
markets of the world and has not replaced it.
. on
Some of the reasons for this are the expensive Ses
to changing economic and agricultural conditions beyond his
control. ae : 2
His lack of organization causes him not to have an even
: showing with organized labor and industries. He has not
made his voice heard in the general clamor for state and na-
tional help.
i Pies
Nevertheless, the Georgia fine is rapidly breaking his
shackles of one crop slavery. Many are realizing the advan-

of the year. uae e

Once ate he feels oheourcoed to follow a system of farm-

In learning that he must have big yields from his-cows, hogs
and hens if he makes them profitable, he is likewise learning
that he must have big y:elds from his acres if they show profit.
A man usually enjoys working with anything that is a pay-
ing proposition. He is encouraged to exercise all his energy
and skill in making it show even more profit.

It will not be hard to keep a boy on a farm that produces. <
erops of such good yields and outstanding quality that he is
proud of it. Girls will love farm life when it furnishes them
such conveniences, comforts and luxuries as their city friends
possess,
There is no reason why ony man these days should stay on a
farm that <a not support a ear. x
An ete. tnelier of farmers in Georgia this year are
ou the right road, and they realize as never per that Tfwe
make the land rich, the land will make us rich. :

BUREAU OF MARKETS |
x H. BISHOP, Director
DEPARTMENT AGRICULTURE
EUGENE TALMADGE
Commissioner
, Issued Weekly, Each Thursday
Entered as second class matter February 15,
1922, at the Postoffice: at Atlanta, rgia
under the Act of June 6, 1900. Accep for
mailing at special rate of postage ae
Each individual ad for the
Bulletn should be sent in on separate piece of
paper. No ad will be repeated unless extra
copies are sent. Under Act of the Legislature
the Bureau cannot, and does not, assume any
responsibility for transactions carried out
through the Bulletin. Our services are en-
tirly FREE.
We wish to have the names of
all buyers of hogs, cattle, corn,
sweet potatoes, hay, seed and oth-
er Georgia products on our mail-
ing list. We trust they will not
fail to advise us direct when they
are in the market.
One bushel of corn will make
about three pounds of butter fat
is a statement generally recog-
nized as true by.authorities in dai-
rying.
Since the present price of but.
ter fat is now about 48, it is easy
to see that a bushel of corn would
bring $1.29.
The Georgia farmer is usually
short on cheap roughage, the most
important of which is legume hay.
Each cow needsabout 2 1-2 tons
of good legume hay from frost un-
til grass.
Dr. Milton P. Jarnagin, Profes-
sor, Animal Husbandry Division,
State College of Agriculture,
writes us the following:
T trust that you will succeed
in yeur commendable attempt to
broaden the use of the Georgia
grown hay. s a general rule,
livestock owners are making a
mistake in feeding relatively too
small an amount of roughage in
proportion to the amount of con-
centrates given their animals.
This may be due.to the fact that
in many instances Northern grown
hay is fed. After the freight rate
is added the price necessarily be-
comes very much higher, and the
tendency is to use it sparingly.
Tf our feeders would pay more
attention to the actual digestible
nutriments contained and less at- |-
tention to color and appearance
of hays, I believe there would be
a greater demand for the home
product. Timothy is the standard
generally used in comparing all
other hays. On an average this
zontains 3 per cent of digestible
crude protein, 42.8 per cent of
earbohydrates, and 1.2 per cent of
fat.
Alfalfa hay which ean be
readily grown in much of the
Northern half of the State con-
tains on an average 10.6 per cent
of digestible crude protein, 39 per
cent carbohydrates, and 9 per cent
of fat.
Cowpea hay runs about 13
per cent of digestible crude pro-
tein, nearly 34 per cent of carbo-
hydrates, and 1.1 per cent of fat.
MARKET BULLETIN.
stacked for handling or
MARKET
Lespedeza hay shows an anal-
ysis of 8.6 per cent of digestible |
erude protein, 41.1 per cent car-
bohydrates, and 1.1 per cent fat.
.*Johnson grass hay earries 2.9
per cent of digestible crude pro-
tein, 45 per cent of perhony cuter,
and 1 per cent of fat.
A good quality of peanut vine
hay from which the nuts have
been removed, shows an analysis
of 6.9 percent of digestible crude
protein, 43 per cent of carbohy-
drates, and 2.5 per cent of fat.
These figures would indicate
that most of our Southern grown
hays are superior to those shipped
in, and there is no reason why
there should not be a much more
extensive use made of them.
Mr. W. E. Bobo furnishes us the
following timely information:
Below is given a few simple
suggestions if followed will go a
lone way toward making your
sweet potato crop show a profit.
The crop is now made and the
next most important thing to do
is to save it in a way that will turn
it inte money.
REMEMBER THE WHOLE
SKIN ON A POTATO IS AS
NECESSARY AS THE WHOLE |
SHELL ON AN EGG. No use to
get excited about this statement,
but simply take a little time and
get ready to handle them right
and it will be easy.
(1) They must be dug before
frost injures the vines.
(2) There are half a dozen
methods of digging potatoes but
Best results are obtained with 4
sixteen inch turning plow run one
furrow to the row. This turns up
all the potatoes. The next best
method is to bar off the row with
ordinary turning plow and throw
out potatoes with middle splitter.
(3) Pick up potatoes from each
row and pack in erates, right
there, on the row; instead of
throwing them into heaps. Have
the most careful hands pick up
ONLY the No. .1 potatoes and
place them carefully into crates,
leaving the lower grades to be
picked by another set of hands.
Break off all strings and long
roots. = ee
(4) Get all potatoes into the
storage house the same day they
gre dug..
(5) Be careful to see that crates
are not packed so full as to bruise
the top layer when crates are
in the
storage house. :
Curing and storing is a simple
but very definite thing. Slip shod
hap-hazard methods will not get
results, but if a few simple, com-
mon sense rules are applied you
will be amply rewarded for your
effort.
Interest in dairying and_ live
stock is increasing at a rapid rate
in Georgia.
Mr. W. W. Fitzpatrick of the
American Guernsey Cattle Club
said at the oSutheastern Fair:
We had more interest from
the farmers around the ring side
this year than we have ever had
rin any show in the South.
