MARKET BULLETIN
BUREAU OF MARKETS
C. H. BISHOP, Director
DEPARTMENT AGRICULTURE
EUGENE TALMADGE
Commissicner
Issued Weekly, Each Thursday .
Jntered as second elass matter February 15,
- 1922, at the Postoffice at Atlanta, Georgia
under the Act of June 6, 1900. Accepted for
mailing at special rate of postage provided
for in secition 1108, Act of October 8, 1917
IMPORTANT: Each individual ad for the
Bullen should ke sent in on separate piece of
paper. No ad will be repeated unless extra
copies are sent. Under Act of the Legislature
the Bureau cannot, and does not, assume any
responsibility for transactions carried out
through the Bulletn. Our services are en-
tirely FREE. /
ae
Appearances certainly count!
Farmers should keep this in mind
even with the hogs as, note the
following from Mr. L. B. Fulmer
of Springfield, South Carolina:
Have bought lots of pigs from
Georgia and find many of them
have their tails cut off and ears
cut up in sueh a way as to detract
very much from their appearande
and value. :
Tt is mighty hard to break the
farmer who always has something
to sell from his farm, said Judge
Max L McRae, recently.
It has been my observation that
with a little careful planning, the
majority of Georgia farmers can
have something to market every
week in the year.
Some 4f the most successful far-
mers I know are making all of
their expenses from, month
to
month in such a way that they
ean sell their cotten whdaever
they please as, a surplus crop.
Some valuable information as
to the time for planting oats was
given out recently by the State
ollege of Agriculture at Athens
and Coastal Plains Experiment
Station at Tifton.
The results from the five years
test showed very positively that
the best date to plant Appler and
Fulehum oats, was October 15th.
Furthermore, the test indicated
that about eight pecks of seed
-per acre gave the best yields.
All seed oats should be treated
with formaldehyde.
More consideration should un-
doubtedly be given oats as a graz-
ing and eover crop.
The Georgia Porto Rico potato
certainly deserves a more promi-
nent place on the nations mar-
ket than it is now obtaining. The
farmer must do his part in seeing
that only the very best grade is
put on the market. :
With very eareful attention to
his seed, to methods of cultivat-
ing and the eareful harvesting and
paeking, it is entirely possible to
increase enormously the demand
~ for this product.
There are those in the state who
are working persistently and in-
telligently along these lines, and
we believe valuable results will
be accomplished.
ti
Mich information is available
WMAHKEYT BUDEETIN ~~
as to the value of feeding corn
to dairy and stock cattle.
Our farmers may make a. mis-
take in selling their corn at too
low a price just now. :
Some feeders find it very prof-
itable to harvest their corn, with
the stalk, including velvet beans,
Soy beans or peas, grinding it all
together and using it for horse
and cow feed. There are many
merits in this method.
The farmer usually gets top
market when he sells his feed stuff
to his own live stock.
Farmers wives interested in
Better Homes, may get books on
food values, cooking, sewing, care
and feeding of children and many
other subjects pertaining to better
homes, from the Georgia Library
Commission at no expense but the
return postage. Address Georgia
Library Commission, State Capi-
tol, Atlanta.

DIVERSIFIEO FARMINGITS
BENEFITS AND POSSIBILI-
TIES
Thousands-of people from all
parts of the south are visitors at
the Southeastern Fair, Atlanta,
Georgia, this week.
The writer wishes that every
farmer in the state might visit
the fair and enjoy the wonderful
agricultural exhibits whieh dis-
play super fine specimens of al-
most every known food product
and actually see for themselves
the many splendid results of di-
versified farming in Georgia.
The Georgia exhibits of live
stock, poultry, fruits, vegetables,
erain, ete., rank among the high-
est in grade and quality of any
farm produets display and every
farmer would be filled with pride
to see the magnificent display that
his state presents.
Each producer who visits the
Wair undoubtedly will be fired
with a new ambition to raise high
quality products next year.
We read much_as to the possi-
bilities of Georgias Agricultural
resources and those who visit the
Southeastern Fair this week will
see for themselves that no, descrip-
tion of our states agricultural op-
portunities can be over-estimated
jor exaggerated.
The citizens of Georgia are just-
ly proud of the farmers display
and on all side we hear his praises
sung.
For the first time in the knowl-
edge of the editor, the Georgia
Department of Agriculture has a
booth at the Fair. |
Your Commissioner of Agricul-
ture, Mr. Eugene Talmadge, has
invited every county in the state
to send to this booth pamphlets,
|booklets or other literature, tell-
ing of the countys chief agricul-
tural preducts and interests. This
literatre is being distributed to all
visitors at the Fair and is an excel-
lent medium of advertising Geor-
gia products and the localitiee in
which they ate raised, to neighbor-
ingvisitors and the stranger]
within our gates.
Here too, information as
best methods of marketing is giv-
en out and examples of correct
aud up-to-date methods used in
grading and packing fruits, veg-
etables, ete., are on exhibition for
the benefit of farmers who would
like to have suggestions which
will help him to better prepare
his erop for sale. oe
Kach division in the Department
of Agriculture has an interesting
and instructive display in the
States Booth, of which Mr. Wal-
ter E. Vance is in charge, and
both he and Mr. Talmadge extend
an urgent invitation to all far-
mers in the state to visit, this
booth which has been arranged
entirely to, benefit the farmer and
to advertise the sale of his prod-
ucts.
If you visit the Fair, we want
you to sign your name in the Far-
mers Registration Book at the
Department of Agricultures ex-
hibit. ae
