The Commissioner~ Reviews. Gobeyi
a Cotton Situation

I hae received a great many, inquiries for an estimate of
From all the separate re-
ports that I have had and from my observation in traveling over ~
the state, the crop will be short of last years yield at 108 .
35 per cent. |
The report of last years crop was the heaviest in the his-

ton and cotton products. At present there is a cotton bagging

manufactured and offered on the market to take the place of
totter The cotton growers. of the country can lend a helping
hand to enha: nee the price of cotton by calling for th's cotton,
bagging at the gin. When the ginners receive. enough ealls
for the eotton bagging, they will buy it.

Jute bagging is a foreign product and every bit that S is =
used decreases the consumption of cotton, just that much.

Pick your cotton out just as fast as you can. It not only
makes a better sample, but you will get more cotton by keep-
ing up w:th it closely.

. To make a lot of lint cotton you will also have to make ees of oe
_ alot of cotton seed. There has. been a shortage in cotton seed
oil for the past season. The large estimate might have been

due to optomistic reports from different localities, on account
of the crops being some better than they had been in the past.

The price of our cotton to a. large extent, is effected by

- these'reports and I am giving this statement as a warning to.
the different ones who make reports of the condition of the
cotton crop, not to over estimate it, as it is a matter of dollars

mated.

New Mailing List Has 21,732 Names
With the inauguration of the new mailing list, this ee
the actual circulation of the Market Bulletin has been reduced
to 21,732. We expect that a number of our readers have failed

to send their coupons in for a renewal. - But even when all of
these are. returned, thelist will only be half its former size,

tory of the country. I am inclined to think that it, was over-esti- of EUGENE TALMADGE, 1k

and cents to the farmers who are selling their cotton.
If conditions are general in the cotton belt as they are.

here in Georgia, I am of the opinion that the present erop of

27 and 28 wile fall one-third short of the crop of 26 and 27.
This: is not advising anyone to hold their cotton. That is a

matter for each individual farmer to determine.

\

We should encourage every industry pee to use cot-

which will mean a saving of 50 per cent on the cost of publi-
cation. It was in interest of this economy that the list was
purged.

We again urge everyone who has been left off the list by

mistake, or who has failed to send in the coupon, to write us

immediately thet we may continue the Bulletin without delay.
You will find coupon enclosed for-sending in subscriptions.

After fall vegetable crops have been planted attention is ealled
to Crimson Clover and Hairy Vetch as valuable crops.

Hairy Vetch when planted with outs or rye will make a profit
able erop as hay.

During the spring of 1925 Seen were started: at the Ex-
_ periment Station to determine the value of vetch and crimson lover
for green manure. _ . 3

Results obtained a that vetch onl larger growth early
in the Spring than believed heretofore. When the vetch was in the

Flower bud stage the green top weighed 6,510 pounds per acre and |

contained nearly 47 4 pounds of n nitrogen Pils amount. of nitrogen is

; is te-313 pounds of nitrate soda.
3 - Three weeks later the nitrogen in the tops amounted to 798
ak which was equivalent to 825 pounds of nitrate of soda. This

is nitrate enough not only for rs erop following t but for several

crops in rotation.

Not only does a veteh erop used as green manure add nitrogen
~ to the soil but it also conserves nitrogen and other plant food by
preventing leaching and washing. Probably a large part of the ni-
_ trogen used by the vetch plant from the soil would be leached | out
iy the land were left bare during the winter.

2 Residual Effect of Phosphates on Vetch

for eotton for the past seven years were planted to vetch in 1925. In
_ the first one of these experiments acid phosphate and rock phosphate
were compared. Both of these fertilizers had been applied at the rate
_ of 400 pounds per acre.

Plats having been treated with acid phosphate gave a vad of
3, 142 pounds of dry matter per sere; those having been treated with
rock phosphate, 3,453 pounds 0 zy matter per acre; and those no
_ phosphate applied, a yield of Lvl pounds of dry matter per acre.
The difference in nitrogen content was about 35 per cent increase
Ai favor of the acid Phosphate and over the plats:

3 caer METHOD FOR PRESERVING SEEDS :

No method of saving watermelon seed wal actually improve the
type of melon coming from the seed. If you wish to improve your
_ melons do your selecting i in the field before they are pulled, bearing
mm mind the number of melons produced, the size and color of each.
melon. on the vine and the general vigor as well as the disease re-
_ sistance of the plant. Tf you like the plant and the way it grows,
_ select your melons from it.

After you think you have a melon tlie; you like eut it open Fdnd
examine the inside, the color of the flesh, the hollowness of the in-
side of the melon, the color of the seed, etc., and if you still like the
_ melon, save the well matured, plump seed frou is

Tt is best to let the melons from which you. intend to save seed

_ Stay on the vine until they are thoroughly ripe. In fact, it is well}.

to let them remain until they are too ripe to be eaten.

_ seed, wash them very gently and lay in a cool, dry place to dry. When
they have dried thoroughly place them in a bag and keep auey from.
mice until planting time the following year.

a The above methods will work well in saving the seeds of canta-
Toupes, cucumbess, squash, or anything of such nature.

A series of plats which had been fertilized in different ways,

eS Growing Crimson Clover :

Crimson clover needs a firm, hard seed bod The land should

not he plowed or cultivated before seeding. Seeding in the hull |
gives better results than hulled seed. The seed should be planted

from September 15th to October 15th without regard to the weath T

~ Liberal application of acid phosphate.
Inoculation of the seed if the land has not grown veteh
previously. Cultures for this can be secured from State
Dept. of Agriculture.
In the Piedmont region vetch shot be seeded the latter.
part of September or the first part of October if there is
enough moisture in the ground at the time to germinate the
seed.
Do not turn under too early or too late. Directions for de:
termining the time to turn under are given in Georgia Ex-
periment Station Bulletin No. 146, which is a preliminary
report of the value of hairy vetch and. crimson clover: for
green manure. , /

MARKET SUGGESTIONS

As fall approaches the house- wife is interested in one and
canning. Les
If you erow Cling Stone peaches or Sink the writer suggests

that these be advertised for sale in some local newspaper published

near your home; the sale price, and your address given.
While the Blberta peach is highly desirable as a table food the
| Cling Stone peach is generally preferred for pickling and canning,

and there is a scarcity of these in the city markets at present, aS
they are not sowell adapted for long distance shipping. The de- G

mand for the cling stone peach could be profitably supplied. oo.

Artichokes will find a ready market for pickling purposes. Ar-
tichokes form a dainty and delicious table food when boiled until |
ie gs served with a thick eream sauce. Ses.

DON'T WASH VEGETABLES THAT ARE TO BE SHIPPED

The Bulletin has received a number of complaints on the man-
ner in which potatoes and other perishable products have been ship-
ped from Georgia growers. The produce companies, advise that
much better priees and results | ean be obtained from such products ~

if they are shipped absolutely dry and without ever having been |
washed at all.

of ehaeen again bees to pour money into the pockets of the
Georgia farmer, when the 1927 marketing season opened on Tuesday,
Aug. 2, with heaviest sales and receipts in the history of the industry

in South Georgia. A total of 3,000,@00 lbs. were sold at average
price of 21.5 cents per pound.
The total crop for season is now being estimated at 50,000, 000

lbs. and growers expect that the average price will run as high as =
| 20 cents per pound which will. bring over $10,000,000 as the total

yield. Reports from the sction indicate that 15, 000 farmers, who _
have planted approximately 55,000 acres of the weed, are all en- 4
wee over the prospagts for a boufitifinl year. eee

HOW EGYPT REGULATES COT-
~. . TON ACREAGE

It is announced that the govern-
ment in Egypt will rigidly enforce
the present law, passed Dec. 8, 1926,

plant more than one-third of his tilla-
ble land in cotton. Violations of the
law are punishable by fine or impris-
_ onment or both, and acreage planted
in excess of the permitted amount
may be uprooted at. the farmers ex-
ems.

crop diversification, so that Egypt
_ will become less dependent on cot-
ton. Under irrigation methods, the
: fertility of the Nile valley is not what
it anciently was. Extension irriga-
tion canals and water impounding
_ schemes have largely stopped the an-
- nual overflows with the resulting. de-
posit of fertile silt. Only a limited
- portion of the Nile valley is now sub-
ject to floods. Yields are conse-
quently decreasing: Egypt must im-
prove her cultural methods, and crop
diversification is sought as a means
to that end.
__ Experiments undertaken by the
_ Egyptian government indicate that a
three years rotation would increase
_the yield of cotton by 20 pounds of
Tint per acre, and at the same time
release more land and water for oth-
er crops. The one-third cotton re-
striction law is intended to help in
establishing such a rotation. Under
the law it will require three years for
the farmer to put all his land into
cotton. The government hopes that a
_ three years trial will demonstrate
_ the value of a rotation system so
_ thoroughly that it will be continued
a voluntarily thereafter. The Progres-

LOCAL ADVERTISING

This is the age of selling. At the
present time particular emphass is_
not being given to buying. Farmers
are ahead of other classes of people
in knowing how to buy. They seem
te be lagging behind other folks in
knowledge of selling.
art obtained from study - and
tice.

of all: selling efforts. -Note the man-
ufacturers and commercial people ad-
vertising through the papers.

ter year. Also note . that special

, drives are started when the manufac-

turers become confinced that they
_must keep the demand up to .their
production. Recent advertising
drives by automobile manufacturers
is an illustration. Their production
was running ahead of their _ sales,
| consequently the increase in adyer-
tising.

Probably i in no section of the coun-
try is there as great an opportuni-
ty for increasing sales of locally
grown products as in the South. The
potential demand for fruits, vegeta-
bles, flowers, meats, poultry _pro-
ducts, eggs, homemade cakes, corn
meal, plants and shrubbery has never
been supplied. During recent years
farmers have felt the need for a di-
versified income and are learning the
value of getting cash returns week
after week, month after month.)

This need has brought about an at-
tempt to sell the products produced
locally to people living in nearby
, towns and cities. ol

Personal solicitation was of course
the first necessary step to get a line
of customers. The curb markets
were organized efforts to sell farm
products.

Splendid progress has been made in
both instances. In those counties
where such efforts have been under
way for several years, the producers
feel as though they have _ reached
their limitthat % they are now
producing all that the demand wil)
take.

My observations show that even_in
the most outstanding instances, not
over a half of the potential demand is
being filled. The thing that needs
to be done where local producers feel
that they are overproducing for the
local markets is to advertise
commodities.

Use the local papers for a saute
matie campaign.
gether on this effort. Use posters
telling about what is for sale. Use
cireular letters drect to those who
are not patronizing the producers.
Use pice 2s an inducement to get
new, customers Follow this uv with
duality commodities and service. All
in all remember the three.elements
of sellingoualitv. price and ser-
