ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, JULY 14, 1927
_ No. 86
4, Melons shall be graded as follows:
Farmers aid to Load Melons Carefully
Ag the water melon movement gets under way in South Geor-
gia, it becomes necessary that the farmers give special atten-_
tion to packing and loading their water melons for shipment.
Prices reeeived for the crop depend as much on the proper
obgervance, of correct packing and shipping rules-by the far-
mers as they do on the actual size of the melons themselves.
A bumper erop, improperly packed and thus allowed to decay
in shipment, will briiig nothing but the lowest prices.
r ough its various conections
The state bureau of markets, throug |
with leading commission houses and produce concerns through-
i eri invaluable aid for mar-
t the country, is offering the farmer inva
Peting the melon crop. But when the bureau sells a car that
ia Mwptoperly packed, it is not only embarassed but it also
loses the confidence of the buyers. As a result, prices are
lowered and the good work of the bureau cut short.

Mailing List to be Revised After This Week
In accordance with the statement published in the June 30th
issue of the Bulletin, the mailing list blank will be discontin-
ued after this week, and the mailing list revised to eomply
wth the actual requests received. The new list will go into
effect immediately and all who do not want to miss an issue
of the paper should fill out the blank and return it without
delay to the bureau of markets. ;
This revision is not being made to deprive any legitimate
reader of his paper, but to purge the mailing list of surplus
and dead names? that have accumulated since the last time
thorough correction was made. Every effort will be made to
see that every man and woman continues to receive the bulle-
tin who deserves it and who is interested in reading its pages.
In filling out these blanks, our readers are urged to write
plainly and carefully. Several blanks have been received
with either names or addresses lacking. We have no way
of sending the bulletin to people who thus oerlook to fill out.
their blank correctly, except to wait until a complaint comes
from them. Careful and prompt-attention to the coupon will
save all readers any trouble or delay with their bulletins. The
mailing list blank will be found on the inside pages.
On the last page will be found another coupon to whieh we
wish to call our readers attentibn. We request that all per-
sons who make sales through the bulletin use this coupon to
inform the bureau of markets of their results. By this man-
ner the director hopes to check up on the work of the depart-
ment and through the information received improve the ser-
vice that they are now giving.
Notice to Vegetable Growers
The Atlanta markets are so glutted with local products that
tomatoes, beans, and other vegetables shipped here do not
bring enough to pay for their express charges. Farmers hav-
ing these products are urged to get in touch with the bureau .
- of markets and let them arrange for the sale at some other
point before any shipment is made.
Much money, delay, and
waste can be prevented in this way. '

Buy Georgia Products First
_ Edited by Mrs. Norman Sharp, Assistant Director State
2 Bureau of Markets.
Bureau of Markets the editor of this department has been
greatly encouraged in the plan for promoting the use of Geor-
3 gia products and developing the agricultural resources of the
state by the Jarge number of letters, telegrams and telephone |
mesages of eongratulations and pledges of co-operation, to
this movement received from influential citizens, both men and
women from all parts of Georgia. :
Business people are realizing more and more that the farm-
. ar's financial success materially effects all business and that
common sense dictates support of the farmer.
Ledders of womens organizations throughout the state are
expressing their desire to co-operate in the movement to buy
Georgia products.
+ J@he assistant Director of Markets has also received letters
offering cordial co-operation from Dr. Andrew M. Soule, presi-
- dent of the State Agricultural College of Athens, Georgia, and
from Dr. H. P. Stuckey, Director of the Georgia experiment
# THE GEORGIA COLLARD
|
i
{
a
Tha, Georgia collard is rich in
health giving food accessories and
serves. well for home use and for sup-
ing local markets. :
ae Georgia Experiment Station
crossed the blue stem collard with
the Charleston Wakefield cabbage
several years ago and since has selec.
a short stem rose-like plant
Be octane: about double the num-
ber of edible leaves as did the pa-
nt collard used in the cross.
*e The introduction of this new va-
riety has been an asset to Georgia
vegetable gardens and truck farms
where this vegetable is grown. _
Plant Collards Late in Stmmer
- The practice of sowing collard seed
in the early spring and fighting green
worms and harlequin bugs on the
plants all through the summer has
been found entirely unnecessary.
The seeds may be sown in plant beds
from late June to the middle of July
and the plants transplanted to the
fleld in late August or early Septem-
ber. Or the seeds may b sown di-
-xeetly in the row where the plants
e t ow.
P Gallarda given fertile soil and good
eulture will grow rapidly on approach
of the cool, rainy weather in the fall.
This crop is resistant to cold and
may be left in the garden and harves-
ted as needed during the winter.
The collard does not ship well and
is not suited for supplying distant
markets, but is easily grown : and
there is a strong demand for it by
local industrial workers during the
winter months. We need the quali-
ties of this vegetable in our winter
diet and should grow plenty of it.

SUGGESTIONS FOR MARKETING
A prominent financia! agricultural
expert gives the following
tions as to marketing:
Profitable farming depends on
not only maximum production but
cost plus a profit.
Local markets, that is a buyer:
nearest your farm is your most profi-
table customer, except for cotton,
You may have 5 buyers for every
bale of cotton raised in your county,
but they all give you one price, dic-
tated to them from New York.
Selling near home gaves the ex-
pense of packing, railroad, and mid-
dle mens commissions,
