VOL. 10
ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, JULY 7, 1927
Buy Georgia Products
It is astounding when we stop to examine figures
that represent the amount of money that is sent out of our
state each year for the purchase of food stuffs. Especial-
ly is this true when we stop to consider that the identical,
same food product that we purchase outside of this state
are raised in abundance right here at home, and yet go
begging for a market.
The time has been when the reason advanced by the
merchants, and also the consumers, for not purchasing
home grown products was that the producer did not |
grade his wares, and neither did he put them up in a mar-
ketable condition (that is to say, that the producer fail-
ed to put his wares up if an attractive manner). Now this
was no doubt true to a large extent in the past, but, of
late years, thru the efforts of different agencies the pro-
ducer has been educated, as it were, until now there are
organizations functioning within this state that offer for
sale Georgia Raised Products that are properly graded,
and packed in as attractive a manner a can be found, yet,
the consumers still continue to purchase these same pro-
ducts, but insist on their being grown elsewhere.
- Now, to prove that assertion, let us look at the use
in regard to apples.. During the year of 1925 there was a
total of 535 cars of apples received in the city of Atlanta.
Of this number only 109 cars were Georgia apples, the rest
coming from the states of Washington, Virginia, and
West Virginia, the state of Washington leading with 159.
cars.
Now there is no logical reason why these conditions
should exist, for Georgia raises as fine, if not finer apples
than are raised anywhere else on the globe. As a matter
of fact, they have taken the prize in the last three nation-
al apple sbows, in competition over apples from every
other state in the Union, yet, our citizens continue to buy |
apples that are raised over three thousand miles away.
There isan old saying that Far off fowls have
feathers fair, and this in all probability accounts for our
citizens buying the foreign grown products, but they
should also remember the other old adage that All is
not gold that glitters. The main, and important thing to
remember is that a dollar spent for Georgia products
stays one hundred per cent at home, and therefore contin.
ues to help build prosperity-and-happiness.for every citi-
zen within our borders. So, in the future when we pur-
chase products let us insist on Georgia products. It;is .
only fair that we should, for, If Georgia gives you a liv-
ing, then you should give her products your preference.

Mrs. Sharps Column
Beginning with this issue Mrs. Norman Sharp, presi- |
dent of the Atlanta Municipal Marketing Association,
This
is the first step of the new administration in the Agri-
culture depar#ment to give the _ an So and
valuable bulletin service.
.Mrs. Sharps column will be devoted to the promo-
en of diversified farming throughout the state and to the
encouragement of cooperation between the farmers and
the housewives who do the purchasing in the city. By
the contact thus established, the Market Bureau hopes to
be able to give the farmer a greater outlet for his pro-
ducts and' at the same time give him the benefit of Mrs.
Sharps scientific information and experience in market-
ing. Mrs. Sharps first article, which is an explanation of
her general purpose will be found on page two. This
page will be turned over to Mrs. Sharp each week.

Georgia Should Lead in Agriculture
DIVERSIFIED FARMINGITS BENEFITS AND ITS POSI-
BILITIESBUY GEORGIA PRODUCTS FIRST.
os ; Edited By Mrs. Norman Sharp.
For many years the writer of this article has listened to
discussions and read numerous articles on conditions surround-
ing the farmers of Georgia, all pessimistic.
ing impressions are without real foundation. /
It is true that unfavorable seasons may come and go but
we are living in the Garden Spot of the World where exists
fertile soil and the climate is unsurpassed.
Thinking people believe that Georgias agricultural develop-
ment is now only in the beginning and are convinced that the
progress of this development will steadily advance.
_ Diversified farming is advocated by high authorities and
is being practised to some extent, but not until the Georgia
farmers supply all foodstuffs for the citizens of Georgia can the
benefits or possibilities of diversified farming be fully reali-
zed. Closer cooperation between the buyer and the producer
is needed to. make diversified farming in Georgia a success.
The main purpose of the newly appointed Assistant Direc-
tor of the Bureau of Markets will be to establish a link between
the logical buyersthe house-wives of Georgiaand the
. Georgia Producer.
In Georgia, bounteous nature holds no secrets. To be a
successful farmer one should consider that admonition with
which we are all familiar; By the sweat of the brow ye eat
bread, which is of importance and has considerable bearing
on success. : :
Recognizing that Georgias agricultural resources is her
greatest financial asset and realizing that all Georgians in- |
terest are mutual, we should put our shoulders to the wheel,
the men and women in the city and on the farm, in a great ef-
fort to bring these natural resources to the highest point of de- |
velopment if we would go forward to a richer heritage.

gia just at this period are not what they should be, brings us
face to face with the elementary fact that where there is effect
there must be cause and the purpose of this page will be to try
~and help locate the cause of causes that tends to make farm-
ing unprofitable.
It is a question that is of vital interest to every business
institution and indeed to each individual in the great state, de-
serving the attention of all and we are asking for such coopera-
tion as has never been given to any movement. _

- Bulletin Mailing List To Be Revised |
Reprinted from dir. Talmadges Letter of Last Week ;
Tt is the purpose of the Department to completely revise the
mailing list of The Market Bulletin.
The statement has been published that there are 76,00uU
names on this mailing list. The cost of publication is based
on the number of copies of The Bulletin printed, at so much .
per thousand. The expense of printing and mailing comes out
of the funds collected from the farmers; therefore, while |]
there is no disposition or desire to eliminate the name of any
reader who properly should receive the publication, at the
-same time it is necessary, as a matter of proper economy, to
purge the list as it now stands of any names not properly on ~
the list. In order to insure a bona fide mailing list, a special
blank is being printed in this issue of The Bulletin with the
request that those people of the state who want The Bulletin
to continue being sent to them sign and return the blank
promptly to the Director of the Bureau of Markets. The
| blank will be printed three consectutive weeks and imme-
diately thereafter the mailing list of The Bulletin will be re- .
| -vised according to the actual blanks received.
The citizens of the state, and those who are interested in
the proper distribution of farm produce of Georgia, are entitl-
ed to the publication, and there is no desire to eliminate from
the mailing list any person who desires the publication, but
rather the purpose is to purge the list of any copies now be-
ing mailed which do not serve a proper purpose. For that
reason the Department asks, if you think enough of The Bul-
letin to want it to continue coming to you, the blank publish-
ed in this issue be promptly signed by you and mailed to the
Director of the Bureau of Markets. If no request is received
from you by the end of three weeks, all such names will be
dropped thereafter and the publication will then be sent only
to a list of bona fide readers of The Bulletin who are inter-
ested in the work and want it. Any person not now feceiv-
ing The Bulletin, who desires it, it asked to fill in one of the
blanks, or write a request to the Department, and the name
will be added to the list. :
