Remembering Sandra
May the work I've done speak for me; May the life I live speak for me; May the service I give speak for me? These
lyrics echo the fabric of Sandras life. Her humility and strong desire to serve others led her to resist notoriety
and public praise. She believed firmly that a life changed through her influence is the testimony that matters. Her
personal values were strongly reflected in her profession and in her volunteer endeavors.
As a mental health counselor, Sandra helped change the direction of numerous children suffering from mental and
emotional disorders. Her focus was directed toward youngsters developing appropriate behavior and life skills in
combatting their problems.
Later she accepted the position of health educator with the Richmond County Health Department, where she
worked tirelessly to bring awareness to the health risks of HIV/ AIDS. Because of her diligence in getting the word
out, she was able to reach hundreds who were infected with HIV/AIDS. She presented seminars and distributed
educational materials in addition to providing support to those living with the virus and or infection. Also, she
worked hard to help eradicate the stigma associated with the virus so that those infected would comfortably seek
treatment.
Even after retiring from her position, Sandra continued her quest to educate and provide support to her fellow
citizens about the dangers of HIV/AIDS. Almost daily, she posted relevant information on social media.
Sandra had a keen interest in young people. One of her most treasured associations with youngsters came through
her serving as an advisor for the Rosa T. Beard Debutante Club. She embodied many of the ideals set forth by
Mrs. Rosa T. Beard, founder of the club. Sandra loved and cherished Mrs. Beard, her role model and mentor, and
worked tirelessly to help instill in the debutantes those principles set forth by Mrs. Beard. Many former debutantes
revere Sandra as a positive role model through their expressions.
Even though Sandra spent a lifetime helping others, her principal focus was her family. Born into a loving Christian
family, Sandras life was infused with love, generosity, positivity, love for God, love for people, and the development
of strong character.
She often expressed intense love and respect for her parents, Dorothy and Flim Wimberly. In addition, her life
was influenced by her grandmother, Frances Wilson, whom she referred to as the family disciplinarian. Another
family member who had an impact on Sandras life was Henrietta Ivery (Aunt Honey). Sandra loved her siblings
unquestionably and exemplified the strong sense of family devotion instilled in her by her elders. She shared
special bonds with her brothers Henry and Bubba (Flim Jr.) and embraced them and their families warmly. She
deeply loved and respected her sister Frances and viewed her with intense adoration.
Sandra, along with her siblings, adopted the Christian principles instilled by her parents and grandmother. As a
result, she accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age at Summerville Baptist Church. In her adult years, she
joined Liberty Baptist Church, where she was active with mission and teen groups. Later, she united with First
Metropolitan Baptist Church and worked with the hospitality and publicity committees. To her, being a Christian
means loving God and mankind and helping those in need.
Sandra had a penchant for forging viable friendships, especially with older people and those whose character traits
she admired. Among her close friends, the day in and day out sisters are Virginia Barnes, Renetta Dubose, Linda
Roberts, and Deanna Brown Thomas and, a special bond with Dr. Cheryl Evans Jones.
