Alpha Valree Val Hines Westbrook transitioned at her home in Augusta, Georgia, on Monday,
March 14,2016, at the age of 99. Alpha has been a Ibng-time resident of the Augusta area. I
She was predeceased by her late husband Rev. L. W. Westbrook, Sr. and a son Dea. LeRoy Westbrook,
Jr. Alpha is survived by a loving daughter Margaret Westbrook Ellis. She was a consummate wife,
mother, and educator. She is survived by a daughter-in-law Brenda H. Westbrook, a son in Christ
Rev. John Harmon, four grandchildren Dennis L^Rogels (Sonya), Rodriquez C. Westbrook (Chasity),
Philanda Y. Westbrook (Taushera), Yolanda IwstWestbrook, and ten great grandchildren Danae

Rogers, Dennis Aaron Rogers, Nickolas Smalls, Brelind Westbrook, Kami Westbrook, Marshall
Lee Westbrook, Kianni Westbrook, Sanaya Westbrook, Naja Westbrook, Nandi Westbrook and two
special nieces Ernie Jackson, Flora Hinton and eighteen other nieces, eleven nephews, and a God
daughter Alpha Harmon Williams, all of whom brought gcpat joy to her later years.
She was the last of eight children, bom to Comealious Hines and Lutishia McDaniel Hines and
was bom on May 18,1916, in Menifee, Arkansas. She grew up in this small rural community where
share crop farming was the way of life. She attended the Conway County Training School from
grades one through twelve and graduated with honors.
With a full tuition scholarship and an opportunity to work on campus to supplement the cost of
room and board, she entered Spelman College, in September 1937. During her Junior year, her life
story of her efforts to go to college appeared in the Saturday Evening Post magazine, in connection
with the United Negro College Fund, under the title Stony Paths to Learning. Her faith in God and
continued prayers proved how God opened the way for her. She graduated from Spelman College in
June 1941, with a Bachelor of Science Degree.
Further studies included Ohio State University, New York University, and the University of
Georgia (Curriculum Development). She counseled youth leaders of vocational clubs of America.
Additionally, she completed two (2) years of study at International Seminary.
Alpha taught vocational Home Economics at Staley High School, Americus, GA. During World
War II, she resigned from Sumter County Board of Education, moved to Kansas City, Kansas, and
became an employee for Montgomery Ward and Company as an Adjustment Clerk, Mail Order
Division. In February 1945, she was called to return to Georgia to pioneer in the field of marketing
and distribution for the State Department of Education as a Food Service Training Specialist in
Atlanta, GA. She traveled to major cities throughout Georgia. This work brought her to Augusta,
Georgia, in 1947 and again in 1948. She was hired to work for the Richmond County Board of
Education as Coordinator for Distributive Education at Lucy Laney High School where she taught
more than 30 years. She retired in June 1978.
As a volunteer at Augusta Regional Hospital, she studied Clinical Pastoral Education under the
supervision of Chapel O.C. Wilson. Alpha served as an intern Chaplain on the Alcohol and Drug
Unit, interviewing and counseling clients, observing behavior and treatment plans for the Children
Adolescent Program (CAAP). She participated in Seminars, interpersonal relationship sessions, and
conducted worship services periodically on Sundays.
Alpha taught reading, spelling, and English at Terrell Visitation Academy for 5th and 6th grades.
Also, she served in records management in the private practice of Drs. Amy M. Sprague and JoAnne
Sherman from 1995-2002. lEfA
Alpha worshiped with the Body of Christ at the Broadway Baptist Church where she served as
Mother of the Church, former First Lady, Sunday School Teacher for young adult women, Deacon
Wives Ministry, Sanctuary Choir, and past President of the Cornerstone Ministry.
