y.
The sun doesnt shine as bright today. Our husband, father, brother and friend
went home to be with his Heavenly Father, December 19,2019 at University
Hospital in Augusta, Ga.
On June 20,1930, Joe was the third of 7 children bom to Joe and Daphne
Samuels in Belair Ga. Rosa, Bernice, Joe, Annie, Ethel, Edward, and Juliette were
blessed to be raised in loving Christian home. Joe attended Haines Normal
and Industrial Institute for a couple of years until he joined the Army in 19S0. Joe
began his career with the VA Hospital in 1955. He worked diligently for the
next 31 years initially in the Motor pool. The last 20 years of his career Joe served as
the Supervisor over Grounds and Transportation for the Charlie Norwood VA
Hospital. In 1976 his wife Shirley was awarded a full stipend by Gracewood to
attend the Medical College of Georgia, where she earned a Bachelor of Science
Degree in Nursing. Seeing her commitment to education Joe went back to school in
1977 and earned his GED. Accomplishing these educational objectives were
extremely proud moments for both in their lives. Joe was united in marriage with
Shirley E. Bell in January of 1953. Through this loving union was bom two sons,
Robert and Michael. Over the next 59 years Joe and Shirley enjoyed a quality of
living that only others can envy. They both enjoyed outdoor activities like fishing
and camping. Their passion was traveling
across this vast country of ours. Overall, Joe and Shirley traveled over 450,000
miles across America. They were an inseparable couple who demonstrated the true
essence of what a blessed marriage should look like. If you thought of Joe,
you inevitably thought of Shirley because they were two peas in a pod.
As a faithful member of Beulah Grove Baptist Church, Joe served on the Tmstee
board for well over thirty years. He also was a member of the Male Chorus, and
the Senior Choir. Additionally, after retiring he also served as the Church
custodian for over 10 years until his health started limiting his involvement.
Although, his health was on the decline the last several years, Joes life continued to
be enriched through the worship services and his relationships with
his Church family.
In addition to Joes wife Shirley B. Samuels, and his two sons Robert L. Samuels
(Vemell) and J. Michael Samuels (Carolyn) of Dallas, Tx., he is also remembered
and cherished by two sisters Annie Harris, Augusta Ga., and Ethel Johnson Tempe
Az., one brother-in-law Robert Johnson, seven grandchildren, 9 great-
grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
