Hattie B. Robertson entered eternal rest at Azalea Nursing and Rehabili-
tation Center on December 28, 2018. She was bom Hattie Bell Mason in
Augusta, GA on November 27, 1922 to the late Abraham and Lillie
(Walker) Mason. She was the middle child and only sister of her two
brothers Abraham Mason Jr. and Albert Mason, both of whom have pre-
deceased her. She affectionately become known around Augusta to fami-
ly and friends as Sissy.
Sissy grew up in Augusta, Georgia but by the age of 25 headed north to
Philadelphia for new opportunities and growth. It was in Philadelphia she
began waitressing at a restaurant and met a handsome sailor, Winfred
Lee Robertson, who would turn out to be the love of her life. The two
wed after six months of dating on August 31, 1948 and to this union five
children were bom. After her husbands retirement from the United
States Navy the family relocated from Quonset Point, Rhode Island back
to Hatties tme home of Augusta in 1964.
Hattie was an extraordinary woman serving many different roles. She
was a devoted wife and mother. She was also a dedicated member of
Elim Baptist Church in which she served for decades as an usher. In 1989,
a few years after the loss of her husband she answered the call to take on
a new role of legal guardian. She opened her home to her then 1-year-old
great-niece to raise as her own until the age of 13.
Sissy had the ability to command attention in any room. Standing a mere
51 she had the personality of a giant and a laugh that would bring joy
to anyone near. Upon meeting this special woman, you would instantly
be left with quite an impression. She was truly unforgettable.
Hattie was preceded in death by her husband Winfred Sr. of 37 years, her
sons Winfred Robertson Jr., Gordon Robertson and her granddaughter
Tina Harris.
She leaves to cherish her memory: two daughters Lenore Harris and
Roberta (Gregory) Sampson; one son Robert Robertson Sr.; eight grand-
children Carmelita Harris, Felicia Harris, Tiffany Robertson, Robert
Robertson Jr., Gregory C. (Shandida) Sampson II, Felicia Sampson, Tere-
sa (Kristian) Fair and Olivia Johnson; sixteen great-grandchildren Zayna
Sampson, Aleena Sampson, Gregory C. Sampson III, Kristina Sampson,
Giovanni Sampson, Amari Davis, Benjamin Brooks III, Sameera Pete,
Jessica Clark, Reginald Anderson Jr., Antonio Goodin Jr., Antori Proter,
Kristen Fair, Kristian Fair Jr., Joshua Cousins and Kristopher A. Fair; A
Special Daughter (great-niece) Ambrosia Mason and a host of nieces,
nephews, cousins and friends.
