MR. ULYSSES WASHINGTON RIDLEY, JR., affectionately
known as Sonny, was born on February 13, 1948, to the
late Ulysses Ridley, Sr. and Ruby Dallas Ridley in Augusta,
Georgia. He departed this life on Saturday, May 5, 2018,
peacefully in his sleep.
He was the oldest of five children, two of which preceded
him in death, Mrs. Clara Ridley Crocker and Telemachus
Ridley. Also preceding him in death were nieces, RaShawn
R. English and Shana N. Anthony; and a nephew, John R.
Crocker, Jr.
Ulysses was loved by his family and was a fixture at family
functions. He always made time to gather and socialize
with his numerous family and friends. Mr. Ridley was a
benevolent person but firm in his stance. He truly loved his
family and church family. He was an earnest supporter of
his alma maters.
He accepted Christ at an early age. He was a member of the
Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church for all of his life, where he
served on the Usher Board and the Bereavement Committee.
He was also a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus.
He attended Immaculate Conception Catholic School until
high school. He then attended Lucy C. Laney High School
where he graduated Class of 1966.
After graduating high school he was drafted into the
United States Army to fight in the Vietnam War. He was
an honorable Vietnam Veteran from the years of 1968-1969.
He proudly donned his Vietnam Vet paraphernalia daily and
took great pride in all military activities.
He retired from the U.S. Army after twenty-seven years of
service. He received numerous war ribbons and medals. He
was always proud to serve his country.
He leaves to cherish fond memories: sister, Faye R. Anthony
of Augusta, Georgia; brother, Christopher M. Ridley of
Euless, Texas; five nieces, V anessa A. Ridley of Virginia Beach,
Virginia, Kimberly A. Ridley of Ellenwood, Georgia, Janis M.
(Robert) Johnson of Grovetown, Georgia, Cabeiro Brown
and Cabeiri Brown of Wadley, Georgia; three nephews,
Keith Anthony, Kevin Anthony of Augusta, Georgia and
Dante Brown of Jacksonville, Florida; three great nieces,
Gabrielle Hunter, Katlyn Johnson of Grovetown, Georgia
and Kiersten Ward of North Augusta, South Carolina; great
nephew, Darian Hunter of El Paso, Texas; and a host of
relatives and friends.
Farewell, my family, dont weep
For Im at peace now, just asleep.
Farewell, my family, Im not alone.
The Mighty Maker has led me safely home.
Just think hack over the many years,
How the family seemed so strong, holding back tears.
Yet God somehow always made a way
and I thanked Him every night for another day.
Be good my family, always love each other.
Be strong my family, strong in heart.
The blood ties, no one can ever part.
And if somewhere I made a mistake
As you live many will you make.
Farewell, my family, Ive been called away.
Walk with God, trust in God
Each and every day.
