** OBITUARY **

On May 20, 1988, George Raymond Peters, Sr. made his transition from

this earthly life.

:

He was born in Philadelphia, Pa. on December 12, 1923. He was the only son of Mrs. Izene White Peters (Stephens). His father, George Peters, was from the West Indies. his only sister died in infancy.

While still a baby, Raymond (as he was known) was brought by his mother to her native home of Anderson, S.C. He began school in Anderson, but was soon brought to Augusta where he enrolled at Weed School. He was considered an exceptional student and was skipped a couple of grades. During this period, he was raised largely by his aunt, Nurse Susie Foster White. He became a life-long member of Rock Of Ages Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, where he served as a trustee and a steward. Many of the residents of the Sand Hill came to know him as their paper boy during his school days.

After high school, Raymond continued his study at Paine College but decided to join the Army during World War II. The Army trained him as a welder and employed him to help construct ships for the U.S. Navy in Norfolk, Virginia. The Army also used him as an academic instructor and as a driver of military cargo to the front line of the war in the Rhineland and Central Europe. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal and the
European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with three Bronze Stars.

He worked for a time for the Veterans Administration Hospital, the North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company, and the Carolina Steel
