Mattie Louise Briscoe Mitchell, was born to the late
JoEva and James Franklin Briscoe on May 21, 1920, in Warren
County, Georgia. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ms.
Maria Golden and Mrs. Effie G. Hill and four brothers, Leroy
Golden, James Grady Briscoe, Charlie H. Briscoe, Sr. and Rufus
Briscoe.
Mattie was baptized at an early age at Lithonia Baptist Church
in Camak, Georgia. She later joined Elim Baptist Church and
remained faithful for over 30 years.
Mattie was a mentor to many and was employed by Richmond
County Board of Education as an Elementary Teacher for thirty-
one (31) years. It was a profession that she loved and respected.
She retired professionally in 1989, but continued imparting les-
sons until her Homecoming. Her community associations in-
cluded: Paine College Alumni Association and the Richmond
County Board of Retired Teachers Assocation.
Mattie leaves to celebrate her life and
home-going: a sister in heart, Ms. Gladys
A. Briscoe; twenty-seven nieces and
nephews; many great and great-great-
nieces and nephews; a devoted god-
daughter; and other loving relatives and
friends.
Aunt Mattie, your will be truly missed
by many. Her love for people and chil-
dren, young and old, is a legacy that will remain embedded in
our hearts and minds forever.

If I can help somebody as I pass along, If I can cheer somebody with a
word or song, If I can show somebody he is traveling wrong, Then my
living shall not be in vain.
If I can do my duty as a good man ought, If I can bring back beauty to
a world up wrought, If I can spread loves message that the Master
taught, Then my living shall not be in vain.
Then my living shall not be in vain, Then my living shall not be in vain;
If I cari help somebody as I pass along, Then my living shall not be in
vain, Then my living shall not be in vain.
