2601 WHEELER Roap | AUGUSTA, GEORGIA _
MILDRED MARIE THOMAS MCDANIEL, daughter of the late Eugene and Marie Thomas, was
born November 2, 1939, in Munnerlyn, Georgia. She transitioned to the loving hands of God on
October 14, 2018, after struggling with a long illness.
Mildred attended Waynesboro, Georgia public schools, and received a Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences from Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia in 1960 and obtained a Master's degree in Education from the University of South Carolina in 1981.
On May 23, 1962, she was united in Holy Matrimony with John W. McDaniel, from which this union produced two children, D'andrea and Tony.
As one of Augusta's most beloved and outstanding teachers, she taught at Lucy C. Laney High School, The Academy of Richmond County, and Glenn Hills High School where she finished her career. From the moment Mildred had her first interaction with each student they felt valued as individuals with real worth who could make contributions to society. Much of her legacy will be comprised of students who remember the loving life lessons that she taught and who are passing on those lessons to others. Mildred retired from teaching after over thirty-four years of service in the Richmond County School
System.
Besides being a wonderful teacher, Mildred was active in her community. She was appointed to and --
served on the Augusta-Richmond County Coliseum Authority, was an active member of the social -
_ club Les Ames Libres and a proud member of the Red Hat Society.
on
~ Mildred was a devoted member of St. Mark United Methodist Church for over fifty years where she
_ served faithfully in numerous capacities.
Any of those who had the privilege to have Mildred in their lives knew that she was honest, matter of
fact, and straightforward, but also caring. She lived a life not just by words of encouragement but by --
- actions that inspired and helped so many people.
"e
ie During her times of illness over the past several years, Mildred never gave up fighting. Even though
_ she was often not at her best, she continued trying to live life to its fullest. She enjoyed attending _ events, socializing and the company of her family and friends.
_ She was preceded in death by sisters, Delphine Zuber and Annie C. Smith; brothers, Clarence Thomas,
_ George Thomas, Lawrence Thomas and Herbert Thomas.
