Cjeorge dienry Mays, Sr.
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes, and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor
crying, neither shall there be any more pain; for the former things are passed away.
~ Revelations 21A
Having heard and heeded the call of his Master, Qeorge Henry Mays, St., departed this life
on Sunday, January 18, 2004. He was born October 7, 1933, in Keysville, Georgia to the late Mr. Ernest
Mays and Mrs. Luella Martin. He was fondly known as Bubba.
He was married to Mrs. Frances Jones Mays for 43 years. To this union two children were born,
%
Jennifer and George, Jr.
He was a 1951 graduate of Immaculate Conception Academy. After graduating from high school,
he served three years in the United States Army. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Paine
College, and his Masters in Education from Augusta State University.
He served as an educator at the Augusta Youth Development Center for thirty years until his
retirement in 1989. He was concerned for the quality of life for all people especially our youth. As a
member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, he was responsible for the organization of the churchs GED
Program where he served as the Director. He was a GED Instructor at Augusta State University, and he
served on various boards in leadership capacities.
His favorite pastimes were playing golf, writing poetry, and inspiring others. His service to the
Lord was exemplified by his service to others. He touched the lives of many troubled youth in this
community through his teaching, training, and mentoring.

Death casts a consuming sadness on the heart of a house, That not even a torrent of teardrops could
possibly douse. Missing is someone whose feet have trod the barren floor- Someone whose life was rich,
although his coffers were poor. Someone who communed with nature on a first name basis - Someone who
avoided modern day life with all its rat races. But now the hearse rolls down the narrow, muddy, rutted
road, to forever take this person far away from his beloved abode. As they carried him out of the place
where he used to dwell, it was as if someone had stolen the sweet chime from the bell. It was as if someone
had robbed the trees of its cooling shade. It was as if someone had taken the tartness from the cool lemon-
ade. A human life that ebbs away is always a very melancholy thing. For everyone knows that something
unique had taken wing. But when the human population count is not quite so dense, the loss of even one
life initiates a sadness that is immense. As the hearse revisits the tracks that it had previously made,
Natures creatures harmonized in a sweet, symphonic serenade. And the old weather beaten house with
the wreath on the door, will never again feel his footsteps on the barren, old floor.
