OBITUARY
Mrs. Alice Christina Curry Heard
December 25,1925 - June 3, 2014
Over sixty-eight years ago, Alice Christina Curry stood in the vestibule of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church
(I.C.A.) and promised to love and cherish the late George Thomas Heard. Along with these vows, came a required
oath to raise all of their children as Catholics. A faithful wife, she carried out this promise and helped raise five chil-
dren, 12 nieces and nephews, and several other children.
Alice was a precious gift to her family since birth. Born on Christmas Day, December 25, 1925, she was a Christmas
present for her parents and a birthday present for her mother who was also born on Christmas Day. Baptized at an
early age, she embraced her Christianity at Bethel A.M.E. Church. She practiced her faith with her mother, the late
Lillie Mae Sibert Curry and her father, the late Jack Curry. In 1931, Jack Curry died leaving his wife with seven daugh-
ters to nurture. Her mother loved, cared, and provided for Alice and her six sisters who preceded her in death: Janie
Carr, Estella Carr, Gladys Curry Griffin, Lilly Carrie, Sarah Curry Oliver and Martha Mae Curry Evans.
Alice was a graduate of Haines Normal Institute, Augusta, GA. She developed lifelong friendships with Dorothy Heard
Morman, Julia Davis, Dollie Heard, Augustus Mae Scott, Elizabeth Brown, Flossie Myles, Ola Wilson and many others.
These ladies laughed together, gossiped on the telephone, shared recipes and cooked dishes, and reared children
while working outside of the home. Alice worked several years as the I.C.A. cafeteria supervisor.
Alice loved children. Relatives, neighborhood children and I.C.A. friends played in her backyard after school and dur-
ing the summers. She had a kind heart; she cared for sick family members and elderly neighbors. She had many
friends of all ages partially because of her famous potato salad, her quick wit, and great sense of humor. Her kitchen
was where she, family, and friends spent many hours. In addition to cooking and serving others, her favorite activity
was shopping. She enjoyed every minute of the time she spent hunting bargains, and oh, how she enjoyed playing
bingo. On Saturday evenings, she would often rush to I.C.A. Hall to get her lucky bingo cards.
Son, Bernard and infant daughter, Margaret, preceded her in death. After the deaths of her sisters, she became moth
er to their children. The Olivers: Betty Adams, Joyce Lillian, Yvonne, and Janet Walker; the Griffins: Evelyn Melton,
Charlie (Jr.), Carolyn Smith, Patricia Caine (d), Alfred (d), Dennis, Carl, and Darryl; the Evans: Ronald (d), Jacqueline
Robinson, Barbara Collins, Deborah Mathis (d), Merrel, Karen Dean, Cheryl Lynn, and Eric.
As her health declined, Alice moved to Atlanta, GA and then to Lexington, KY where she bonded with Lucille Brown.
While living in Atlanta, Alice developed special friendships with Janet Adams, Doris Davis, and Mary Hunt as they lov-
ingly assisted her with daily activities, transportation, doctor visits, hair salon appointments, and social outings for
movies or lunch.
She leaves children : Bernadette Salone (Eddie), Lexington, KY; Anthony (Geraline), James, and Dominic (Edwina), all
of Atlanta, GA to continue her legacy of caring for family and friends. Eight grandchildren: Kafi Heard Green, Kemba
Heard, Jamila Heard Lisbon (Ryan), Bayan Salone, Tuere Heard Mincey (Scott), Edric Salone, Jasmine Heard, and Dom
inic Michael Heard, Jr. will cherish memories to share with her great grandchildren: Jaden Peck, Harrison Green, Far-
rah Mincey, Scott Mincey, II, Kaleb Peck, Spencer Green, Grace Lisbon, Matthew Heard, and Benjamin Lisbon.

BEFORE I LEAVE THE STAGE
Before I leave the stage
I will sing the only song
I was meant truly sing
It is the song
Of I AM
Yes, I am Me
&
You.
WE ARE.
I love Us with every drop
of our blood
every atom of our cells
our waving particles
-undaunted flags of our Being-
