Obituary
John Gordon Floyd
John Gordon Floyd entered into rest December 29, 1996, at
University Hospital in Augusta, Georgia.
A native of Covington, Georgia he had retired as a manager for
the Augusta Housing Authority.
John was a graduate of Washington High School in Covington,
Georgia, and Savannah State College. Following his service in the
United States Army, he was employed by the Guaranty Life
Insurance Company, and later the Augusta Housing Authority
where he worked as a manager for over thirty years. Following his
retirement he served as a substitute teacher in the Richmond
County Public Schools.
He was an active member of Christ Presbyterian Church (U S A.)
serving in many capacities. He served as superintendent of the
Church School for over thirty years, as Elder and Clerk of the
Session, Deacon and member of the S.S. Johnson Mens
Organization. He also served in many unnamed capacities of the
church working behind the scenes to assure the ongoing work of
the church and its mission.
He was a member of Alpha Chi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi
Alpha Fraternity and the Savannah State College Alumni
Association.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille Ellis Floyd, two sons, Dr. John
E. Floyd, Athens, Georgia and Dr. Joseph B. Floyd, Stone
Mountain, Georgia; two sisters, Martha Floyd, Augusta, Georgia
and Carolyn Ramsey, Norfolk, Virginia; two daughters-in-law,
Juanita Floyd and Dr. Virginia Floyd; one brother-in-law, Isaac
Ramsey, four grandchildren, Gregory Floyd, Leah Floyd, Lauren
Floyd, Justin Floyd; two nephews, Isaac Ramsey, Jr. and Asa
Floyd.
