Reverend Augusta H. Hall, Jr. - Senior Pastor
WILLIE CHILES was born in Greenwood County, South Carolina on May 2,
1921. He was the last of five children born to David Luke and Nancy Nobles
Chiles. He was preceded in death by his son, William David Chiles, Esq., and his
four siblings, James, Effie, Martha and Frank. The family relocated to Augusta,
Georgia when Willie was a young child He was educated in the Augusta Public
School System and graduated from Paine College which he loved dearly. His
lifetime memories are of his beloved hometown, Augusta. Willie served as an
officer in the United States Army during World War II and was stationed in the
European Theater where he served with distinction.
Willie modeled what it was to be a Christian, as he read his Bible daily, was
fully committed to his church family and acted as a Christian. Willie loved
his church, Bethel A.M.E., with which he had a lifetime affiliation. He served
as a longtime Steward, taught Sunday School, led Bible Study, served as Class
Leader #2, was a lifetime member of the 20th Century Board, and a member of
the Happy Bunch. His contributions to Bethel were numerous.
He was married to his beloved Maude Smith Chiles (1923- 2001) for more than
fifty years. From this union one child was joyously welcomed, William David
Chiles Esq.(1949-2011).
A retiree of The United States Postal Service, Willie was an avid exercise
enthusiast, fisherman and golfer. How he enjoyed getting out on the greens!
Following retirement, his sense of community led him to tutor young adults. He
frequently supplied his tutees with books, clothing, and anything they needed
to succeed. It is not everyone who can say that he overcame incredible odds
and hurdles to achieve his goals, while pausing to give quality and generous
assistance to struggling segments of our society.
Willie was a wonderful raconteur and possessed a memory for detail. He was
devoted to his family and friends and was always willing to share his time
and talents to help anyone in need. Spending time with Willie provided rich
nourishment for the soul, and for that we celebrate his life and express our
enduring gratitude for every moment he spent on earth.
The Lord has called our brother Home... Well done my good and faithful
servantfMatthew 25:23). He leaves to mourn: his daughter-in-law, Sonya Chiles;
grandchildren, William Joseph Chiles and Nancy Chiles Shaffer (Demetrius);
niece, Francene Chiles Mangham (Marvin); nephew, Samuel Chiles; and other
dear relatives and friends.
