ID LIKE THE MEMORY FOR ME, TO BE A HAPPY ONE.
ID UKE TO LEAVE AN AFTERGLOW OF SMILES,
WHEN LIFE IS DONE.
ID UKE TO LEAVE AN ECHO,
WHISPERING SOFTLY DOWN THE WAYS.
OF HAPPY TIMES AND LAUGHING TIMES,
AND BRIGHT AND SUNNY DAYS.
ID UKE THE TEARS OF THOSE WHO GRIEVE, TO DRY BEFORE THE
SUN, OF HAPPY MEMORIES THAT I LEAVE WHEN LIFE IS DONE.

MRS. SAMUELLA WILLOUGHBY CHILES was born on
January 1, 1917, in Denmark, South Carolina and moved to
Augusta, Georgia with her family at an early age. She entered
into rest on December 16,2017, at her daughters home in East
Point, Georgia. Mrs. Chiles graduated from Haines Normal
and Industrial Institute, a private institution for African
American students founded by Miss Lucy C. Laney. It later
became a public high school, Lucy C. Laney High School. Mrs.
Chiles graduated from Paine College in 1938, and later earned
a Masters degree from New York University.
In 1945, upon his return from World War II, Frank H. Chiles
and Samuella Willoughby were married, and to that union, two
children were born: Francene Chiles and Samuel Willoughby
Chiles.
Mrs. Chiles began her career in education in 1938 with Irwin
County Schools, and in 1941 with the Richmond County Board
of Education. She taught World History and other Social
Studies classes at Lucy C. Laney High School. As the school
integration process started, Mrs. Chiles was transferred to
Butler High School where she taught until her retirement in
June 1980. Although she retired from Butler, Mrs. Chiles is
fondly remembered as one of the legendary faculty at Lucy C.
Laney.
Samuella was a loyal and active member of the Haines
Institute Alumni Association and the Paine College Alumni
Association For many years, she served as the Financial
Secretary for Haines Institute Alumni Association as well
as Chairperson of the Scholarship Committee. For decades,
she served her community as a member of the Womens Civic
Club, Richmond County Retired Teachers and Neighbors
United. She also enjoyed playing bridge as a member of the
DYWYK Bridge Club. Throughout her life, Mrs. Chiles was
an avid sports fan. She was a loyal and unwavering fan of the
Atlanta Braves, Georgia Bulldogs, Atlanta Falcons, and in later
years, the Atlanta Hawks.
Mrs. Chiles was an active and dedicated member of St. Mark
United Methodist Church for most of her adult life where
she served on many boards and committees. She served as a
Trustee and also as a member of United Methodist Women. In
2010, she was honored by both St. Mark U.M.C. and Church
Women United for her work in the church and community. In
November 2013, Mrs. Chiles moved from her beloved Augusta
to live with her daughter in East Point, Georgia
Samuella Chiles may have retired from her official position as
a teacher, but she never stopped teaching. She continued to
impart her wisdom, work ethic, and character to her children,
grandchildren, and even her great grands. She was a strong,
independent, loving, generous, stylish, and spunky lady who
was loved by many.
Mrs. Chiles was preceded in death by: her beloved husband,
Frank H. Chiles; and brother, John M. Willoughby.
She is survived by: her daughter, Francene Chiles Mangham
(Marvin); son, Samuel W. Chiles; three grandchildren, Jason
