Dr. Allen Nicholas Brown, Sr. was born on February 16, 1924 in Buffalo, New York. He
was one of three sons of the late Rev. Canon and Mrs. Osmond Henry Brown, Sr. He
attended public schools in Buffalo, New York. After graduating high school, he joined the
United States Army then attended Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, and
attended Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee.
He graduated from Meharry Medical College in 1948 and did his internship at Homer G.
Phillips Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. He completed his residency at Sumby Memorial
Hospital in River Rouge, Michigan. It was at Meharry where he met and married Anne
Ponder, RN, on March 8, 1947. He then volunteered for the United States Air Force as a
flight surgeon serving in various locales such as San Antonio, Texas, Castle Air Force Base in
Merced, California where he ended his tour of duty.
In 1955, Dr. Brown came to Augusta at the invitation of his brother, the late Rev.
Osmond H. Brown Jr. He established his family practice on Ninth Street where he occupied
two locations. He later moved his office to Druid Park Avenue. He was the college physician
at Paine College for over 20 years during his career.
He was the director of the Sickle Cell Anemia Center for several years. He was the first
African American to become a faculty member at the Medical College of Georgia. He served
as the medical director at the Pilgrim Health and Life Insurance Company.
He was a member of the Jazz Unlimited Group as well as a member of the committee
to establish a symphony in Augusta. Other groups and organizations: Charter member of
the Alpha Mu Boule of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, Inc.; Masonic Lodge No. 3 F. & A.M.;
Stoney Medical, Dental, and Pharmaceutical Society; Georgia State Medical Association; St.
Marys Episcopal Church; American Association of Family Practitioners; National Medical
Association; St. Marys Vestry (several times); St. Marys Mens Club; and Richmond
County Health Department.
One son, Stephen Edward Brown, preceded Dr. Brown in death. Survivors are his loving
wife, Anne Brown; two daughters, Karen Brown, Oakland, CA, and Lorraine Brown,
Atlanta, GA; four sons, A. Nicholas (Jennifer) Brown, Jr., Atlanta, GA, Collin Keith
(Sabrina) Brown, North Augusta, SC, Marc Emery (Cheryl) Brown, Atlanta, GA and
Russell Joel Brown, New York City, NY; daughter-in-law, Loretta E. Brown, Augusta, GA;
grandchildren, Marc Emery Williams, Stephen Alexander Brown, Heather Brown, Danielle
Brown, Dominique Brown, Allen Nicholas Brown, III, Cynthia Mathews, Janice Lewis and
Tracie Creighton; niece, Sutton Bacote, Timmonsville, SC; nephews, David and Paul
Brown; sisters-in-law, Thelma and Minnie Brown, and Brenda Bell; brothers-in-law, Leslie
Ponder, Lovest Ponder and Worley Holmes; and a host of other relatives and friends.
