- Letter from Luke Stein, owner and manager of the Palace Theatre in Valdosta, Georgia, to his brother Ben Stein, owner and manager of the Douglass Theatre, dated July 14, 1927, regarding theater business. Luke complains that business is so dull that he will be lucky to make expenses this week. He discusses family matters, including travel plans. Luke approves of what Ben is paying performers and enthusiastically urges him to book the singers that he hired. He further advises Ben to persevere with boxing matches, noting that the Jacksonville matches produced $300 to $500 before fighters started framing matches. Luke counsels his brother that a series of good fights will draw patronage. He mentions that he is sending Ben paper and slides of films that he has shown and directs Ben to make a record of what he has in stock so that when he orders paper he will know what he already has. Interrupted by family members who have come into his office, Luke concludes by asking for a weather report.

Dear Ben;
Your long appreciated letter received this morning and was glad to hear from you, and I appreciate the fact that you are trying to do every thing [everything] that you can, and dont give up hope and everything will come our [out] alright [all right], as it is just as I said things are so dull every where [everywhere] if I make expenses this week I will be some luckey [lucky] as Tuesday I took in thirty dollars
Anna became suddenly sick yesterday and she was bad off, so I called up Mother and she and Jean came right over, she is much better today and will be alright [all right] in a few days, Mama is going with Leo and Mary to N C [North Carolina], and Jean is going to stay here, Sophia is here and is now talking to her Dad, she did write home and the reason that she did not write more that she has been staying home with Anna,
I hope you get thebfree [the free] ticket, and if every thing [everything] is Ok I want to take Sophia to the Beach for Sunday and will see you, I approve of you hiring several acts on straight buy or overage and am glad [glad] to hear that you will not play them on fifty fifty [fifty-fifty] at the price of thirty sents [cents]; and I beleive [believe] you will do alright [all right] as after staying away from it for a month they may want it more, make them change every day if they can and advertise the fact, because all of the road shows he has had they only change twice a week and the people came Monday and Saturday and that was all they came; about the singers that I hired you can step on it as they are real entertainers and they will like it and if they do good play

them on a dime overage on three dyas [days] of the next week as if they see you do a good business they will play on the overage; If you will have good fights in time the people will come, as the theatre in Jax [Jacksonville] used to take in from three to five hundred until the fighters starting framing and then they killed it;.
I am sending to you by express paper and slides of pictures that we have already played and you will find three or more and that will be all you need, and the comedy sheets I dont know what comedies you are playing you will have a jobepicking [job picking] and checkning [checking] the one sheets but it will save you good money, when you receive it make a invoice and then check when you are going to play them then mark in your book what you have already n [in] so when you order paper you will know what you have already i n [in];.
Jean Sophia Hannah are now in the office and I cant write while they all are talking so will have to close with love from Sophia and all the folks; how is the weather pleas [please] put weather in the reports if it rains in the afternoon and dont at night say so in the report;
