Delta Air Lines System Timetable 1947 July 1

On Lookout Mountain, visitors see both the past and present of Chattanooga.
5 NEW CITIES ON DELTA ROUTES
Five Southern cities gained a new ad-
nintal,!e in business competition this month,
as Chattanooga. Columbus, Macon, Mont-
gomery and Selma were added to the
routes of Delta Air Lines. The fir,-t four
now have regular daily schedules, while
fli;.d1ts to Selma will begin soon.
For these manufacturing and trading
centers, Delta service means new speed in
bu,-iness travel, faster correspondence via
air mail, and quick delivery via Delta Air
Freight or Air Express of goods and parts.
Also, in addition to the access to new mar-
kets, a fast, new means of personal and
Yacation travel.
INDUSTRIAL-HISTORIC CHATTANOOGA
Chattanooga is the nerve center of the
vast T\lA empire. It 1s a city of produc-
T ypical of Columbus industry, this mill
produces cord for the nation's tires.
tion, gettinl! coal. iron. timber and min-
erals from the surrounding mountains and
producing some 1,500 different items for
sale to the world. It lies in a big bend of
the Tennessee River, which gives the city
another means of moving heavy freight.
The great Chickamauga Dam adds to the
power supply, also backs Ufl a 59-mile long
lake which has become a water play-
ground for the region.
Unlike most industrial cities, Chatta-
nooga is outstanding for its historical and
scenic attractions. With its Lookout and
Signal 11ountains, its famous battle fields,
i'ts scenic beauty and recreation facilities,
it attracts more than a million visitors an-
nually.
ON THE CHATTAHOOCHEE
A flii9t over Columbus will show what
makes It grow. For 30 miles above the
city, the Chattahoochee tumbles over falls.
That's power. Below the. city, the river
is navigable. Hence, the choice of site.
Around is some of the richest land in the
world, feeding raw materials into the Co-
lumbus mills. Textiles are particularly
important, and there are well over half a
million spindles in the city. Delta flights
to Columbus will also give new trans-
portation to nearby Fort Benning and
Girard.
ALABAMA'S CAPITAL
Montgomery is also at the head of navi-
gation-on the Alabama River. Yesterday,
it was the birthplace of the Confederacy;
Jefferson Davis took his oath of office
there. Today, it is as modern as a Delta-
liner. It is at once both the state capital
and an important commercial city. It is a
big market for cotton, cattle, pine and
hard.woods, and w,es power from the near-
by Coosa and Tallapoosa rivers for manu-
facturing purposes.
RICH, BLACK LAND
Selma spreads along the north bank of
the Alabama River, surrounded by some of
the l~lackest, most fertile land in America.
It produces in amazingly big volumes every
kind of crop fitted to Southern climates.
Livestock and poultry add to Selma's econ-
omy. The city has an excellent airport,
which will be used for Delta flights just as
soon as terminal building construction is
completed.
Montgomerys past attracts tourists. Indus-
tries like its power and location.
"THE HEART OF GEORGIA"
The peaches that make Georgia famous
/!!"OW especially luscious and big around
:\Iacon, the geographical center of the
state. Equally famous is its "cotton coun-
try," with the manufactured volume of
cotton apparel alone worth $50,000,000
annually.
With its climate and central location,
Macon is one of Georf!ia's favorite con-
vention cities.
Wide streets and parks dominate the busi
ness centers of charming Macon.

TO THE SOUTH
Five important Southern cities have been
added to the routes of Delta. Passenger, mail
and cargo service is now open to Chatta-
nooga, Columbus, Macon and Montgomery,
while flights to Selma will begin soon.
Delta, serving the South for nineteen years,
is proud to link these key cities with all the
other points on its system.
The addition of these cities to the Delta
system is one more step in a long-range plan
to give complete air service to the South ...
to give service not only between all major
centers of the South but also to give the
South fast and direct access to the major
trading centers of the nation.
