Breaks Speed Record

ELTA'S new non-stop flight between Chicago
and Miami broke unofficial speed records for
commercial ships during November, the first
month the non-stop operated.
Faste t time southbound was 4 hours and 36
minute, a mark set by Captain R. S. elson, who
arrived in Miami on ovember 14 exactly 1 hom
and 24 minutes ahead of schedule. With the help
of a tail-wind, he averaged 285 miles per hour
over the 13ll-mile route.
During the first 20 days the non-stop flight op-
erated, it averaged 5 hours and 18 minutes south-
bound, or 42 minutes less than the 6-hour sched-
ule: while the northbound non-stop flight aver-
aged 5 hours and 43 minutes, or 32 minutef. less
than the 6: 15-hour northbound schedule.
Passengers aboard the speedy flight took a
keen interest in the flying time and were in some
cases making friendly bets about the number of
minutes their fliizht would arrive ahead of sched-
ule.
ROOM TO RELAX is a main feature of the Delta DC-4. This type ship now flies non- top
from Chicago to 1\Iiami in just 6 hours_ with 44 comfortable seats in spaC'e for 60.
Other express flights will stop at Knoxville, At-
lanta, avannah and Jacksonville. Delta operates
8 flights daily, of which 3 are DC-4's, from Chi-
cago to the South- 5 to Miami, 2 to Charleston,
S. C.. and 1 to avannah.
Delta Opens Air Service
To Lexington, Kentucky
Home of the thoroughbred horse industry, gate-
way to Kentucky's blue grass regions, Lexington
i~ now a re1rnlar stop on Delta' Chicago-:Miami
llights. Daily flight schedule followed the opening
of Lexington's new municipal airport. Flights to
Florida will be over two routes, one through At-
lanta and the other via Piedmont cities. North-
lio11nd flights are to CinC'innati anrl 1.hfrago.

POPULAR AS GIFTS
Now, for the first time, you can

mas, birthday or graduation present.
The actual ticket is enclosed in a
handsome gift folder which bears the
name of the donor. The ii;ift ticket
may be used as desired by the re-
cipient, who has the privilege of ex-
changing it for another destination
or may obtain a complete refund ii
not used. Gift trip certificates are on
sale, for the first time this month, at
all Delta ticket offices. The date of
the trip is selected bv the recipient
later.

Jane Stevenson, 97, who flew recently from At-
lanta to Miami. Youngest, a two-day old boy.
D LL'I A was the first line to off er pas-
senger service across the Deep South.
That was eighteen years ago, on the or-
iginal Delta route between Dallas and
Birmingham and later Atlanta. Six pas-
sengers made up an ample load for the
90-mile-per-hour Travelaires. Fares were
about 10 cents per mile, without meals
or stewardess service. Today's rates are
4 cents per mile, at 215 miles per
hour in four-engined Deltaliners, with
higher speeds to come.

and Miami, the first scheduled airline ever to offer this
service. Delta's big, smooth-flying DC-4's cruise this
route at 218 miles per hour, cutting nearly two hours
from Delta's previous fastest schedules.
You'll enjoy both speed and comfort in these Delta-
liners. They fly with only 44 seats in space for 60, to
give you uncrowded room to relax or roam about. Take
the children along, for half-fares up to age 12 are now
in effect and youngsters under two fly free.
First to inaugurate D C-4 service between Chicago and
Miami, Delta now offers the only scheduled non-stop
service between the two points. There is also DC-4
express service over the same route, via Atlanta, Savan-

Penalty on No-Shows to Make More Seats Available
Now in effect on all domestic airlines, including Delta, is a program designed to provide more
airline seats by alleviating the "no-show" problem. The plan, briefly ,
stated:
1. Reservations are tentative and are not "firm" until passengers have purchased tickets
within a specified time after being advised ,
space is avaHable. Passengers also a!"e requhed to con-
tact the airline involved to confirm their intention to use return reservations or contimJ~ng reserva-
tions at points of connection.
2. A 25 per cent service charge, or a minimum of $2.50, will be made when reservations a re
not used and not cancelled prior to 1 0 m~nutes before flight departure. No charge is levied if the a ir
line receives word of the cancellation by telephone, telegram, mail, or in person, prior to 1 0
minutes before departure time of the flight.
