D
CIRCLE: Cutaway view of one of Delta's luxurious
all-metal Lockheed Electras showing passengers'
cabin, pilots' compartment and cargo space.
TOP LEFT: Radio control desk. To maintain constant
communication by voice with airliners and to pro-
vide a high speed inter-city reservation service,
Delta has installed a chain of powerful radio tele-
phone and telegraph stations across the entire
Trans-Southern Route.
TOP RIGHT: A Magnaflux inspection unit-one of
the latest developments in airline maintenance
equipment. These electrical units are able to de-
tect flaws or cracks which are hidden as much as
one half inch below the surface of metal parts.
BOTTOM LEFT: In the instrument laboratory, all
flight instruments are periodically disassembled
and subjected to microscopic inspection. Certain
parts which are worn as little as one ten thou-
sandth of an inch must be discarded and replaced.
BOTTOM RIGHT: In the weather bureau. At all
terminals, skilled meteorologists check atmospheric
conditions twenty-four hours each day. Prior to
flight departure time, all pilots are required to
make a careful study of weather conditions along,
and adjacent to, the course to be flown. Enroute
they are kept advised of any changes by radio
telephone.
