- Description:
- Photocopy of handwritten account documenting the early efforts of Confederate Niter Bureau officials Nathaniel A. Pratt and Charles H. LaTrobe to survey Florida for saltpeter production during the Civil War. It describes their travels through various western counties, their geological inspections, and the challenges they faced, including limited evidence of niter and reliance on boat access. Despite minimal findings of saltpeter, they identified promising limestone deposits in several regions, contributing to the Bureau’s broader resource mapping efforts. Sites mentioned: Confederate States of America. Nitre and Mining Bureau. Nitre District 12
