- Sheldon Moore joined the Navy in January 1942 and was assigned to basic training in Norfolk, VA. He served on a minesweeper off of Brazil and in the Panama Canal until mid 1943. He served on the USS Haynesworth out of New York and went on a "shakedown" cruise off of Bermuda. His unit escorted Churchill and FDR on the Queen Mary to Nova Scotia. He later joined Admiral Halsey's fleet in the South Pacific. This unit ferried Marines to Iwo Jima and made strikes in January 1945 on Tokyo.
