Jenny L. Diggs Smalls, daughter of the late Ernest Diggs, Jr. and Pearlean Diggs was born July 1, 1944 in Rockingham, North Carolina and was raised in the Mount Pisgah A.M.E. Zion Church of Rockingham, North Carolina. Jenny was a graduate of the infamous Leak Street High School and attended college at Winston Salem State University. After a two year stint, she took a chance and moved to New York. In doing so, she obtained employment in the clerical department at Manhattan Newmart & Co. Real Estate Firm. Ah! The view from her Manhattan office, daily/yearly of events, Macy's Day Parade, etc., where she took all the kids she could. Jenny became the key figure in Payroll, Time Attendance and Resources at Newmark and received many accolades for her work performance and know-how.
She was very civic-minded and communicated regularly with her famed Leak Street High School Alumni; planning fund raiser events and class reunions. She later became President of the Leak Street Chapter and coordinator for the Washington, DC Chapter. Her efforts saved Leak Street High School as a historical landmark; one of the last segregated schools before closure. Through her efforts honor was given and homage was paid to all past teachers as well as Alumni to the likes of never since.
At an event in 1993, Jenny met her husband, James E. Small, of twenty-five years. She moved from New York to Stone Mountain, Georgia, became a librarian and retired from Sue I<ellogg Library in Stone Mountain Village. An avid reader, Jenny turned her love for reading and fellowship into a book club call "It's A She Thang Book Club" where she was president for many years. A member of the Stone Mountain Women's Club, Jenny also developed an investment club that lead to published articles in the "Skirt Magazine" as well as, "On Common Ground News" paper.
Jenny had a strong faith in God and joined the Emmanuel A.M.E. Zion Church of Stone Mountain. The Christian Education Department and Vacation Bible School were among her favorites. She was instrumental in helping the church youth group as well as her mother to travel to places like Dallas and Houston, Texas for church conferences.
A beautiful spirit. Jenny never met a stranger. She was a people person who loved helping others. Jenny Smalls (Diggs) leaves to cherish her memories: her husband, James E. Smalls of Stone Mountain, GA; daughter, Faith Gilbert of Bronx, NY; son, Shannon Gilbert of New Bedford, MA; stepdaughter, Annie Johnson of Jonesboro, GA; stepson, Antonio Woods of Union City, GA; sisters, Wilemenia H. Diggs, Teresa Diggs Brown (I<enny) both of Rockingham, NC; and Paula E. Diggs of Raleigh, NC; brothers, Everett Diggs, Lawrence C. Diggs both of Rockingham, NC; Larry Diggs of Stone Mountain, GA; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
