- Description:
- Abstract: In an interview in 1978, Mr. Arma Lanze "Cap" Linder discusses his life, family, and some history of Laurens County. Topics include family history, prioritizing his childrens' education, and stories of Dublin, including businesses and local figures. Synopsis: Linder, who says that it is his 89th birthday, talks about his family, including his father and grandfather who were both doctors, and places that he's lived. He says that he went to school at Evergreen and tells a story about his first teacher, Ms. Davis. | Linder identifies neighbors and their properties and recalls the attempted robbery of Joe Perry, which ended in a shootout. He talks about his family history, from his mother and her family, Jorden, who he calls "wealthy." Linder also talks about father, who suffered from a mobility disability and only walked a little. | Linder talks about Dublin's early banks and a few local businesses including the stables, which belonged to Wallace Smith. He discusses how many in Laurens County buried their wealth, and talks about how John Duncan's family was able to dig up his buried money. | Linder discusses his immediate family, from marrying his wife Donnie Bender, to their four children, especially Martha and Arma, Jr.. He talks about why, though he was a good farmer, he never made any money. He always prioritized his childrens' education. | Linder talks about his first memories of Dublin, a small town with no paved streets, the old courthouse, and the riverboats with captain William Ward from Savannah. He returns to talking about his children, this time his son William, or "Billy," who got his doctorate and paid off his loans. | Linder reminisces about his life now that he is living without his wife in an assisted living facility, especially about his successes in raising his four children. That said, he comments about how it is harder for working men like himself to ever accumulate anything, while those who are "born with a silver spoon" have an easier time, but can lose it more quickly.
