- Postcard (color, 3 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches, undivided back) titled – Off the Battery. This postcard features a watercolor painting of the Battery in New York City and signed by the artist. Castle Clinton or Fort Clinton, previously known as Castle Garden, is a circular sandstone fort located in Battery Park, in Manhattan, New York City. Built from 1808 to 1811, it was the first American immigration station (predating Ellis Island), where more than 8 million people arrived in the United States from 1855 to 1890. Castle Clinton National Monument was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 15, 1966. . No descriptive text on reverse. Card labeled ”Private Mailing Card Authorized by Act of Congress, May 19, 1998.” Printed in Saxony *Note: The artist, Florence Vincent Robinson was born in Taunton, Massachusetts in 1874. She began exhibiting her work at the Boston Art Club in 1893 against her family’s wishes that she not become an artist. She studied watercolor in Paris with a number of well-known painters. Rafael Tuck commissioned her to do a series of watercolors depicting New York City that were used to create a set of chromolithographic private mailing cards. Robinson lived in New York City and Hanover, New Hampshire when she wasn’t painting in France, Italy, Spain, North Africa, or in Cuba. She was both a member of the Society of French Watercolor Painters and the American Watercolor Society. She died in 1937. - Metadata URL:
