- Description:
- Postcard (color, 3 ½ x 5 ½ inches) titled – Souvenir of St. Louis. This postcard, featuring inset depictions of Shaw’s Garden, Shaw Mausoleum and a view from the Court House S.E.. In the spring of 1819, Henry Shaw purchased passage for himself and his goods on a steamship called the Maid of Orleans. The trip, which took 40 days, cost Shaw $120. On May 4, 1819, Shaw landed in a small French village on the Mississippi called St. Louis. At the time, the village was about fifty years old. It ran about three blocks deep for about a mile along the bank of the river. Shaw set up a very profitable hardware store. He sold his business in 1839. After which, he made several extended tours in Europe. In 1851, Shaw was inspired to create his own garden on his properties in St. Louis after visiting the wonderful gardens at Chatsworth, the Duke of Devonshire's country seat in Derbyshire, England. For the rest of his life, the creation and care of a garden and a park on his property would be his principle occupation. The Shaw Mausoleum is located in the Gardens. No descriptive text on reverse. Postage required: one cent. Postmarked March 30, 1900 St. Louis, Mo. Card number 10. *Note: Card produced by E. C. Kropp, a Milwaukee publisher and printer that began producing chromolithographic souvenir cards and private mailing cards in 1898.
