- Description:
- Postcard (color, 3 ½ x 5 ½ inches) titled - Official Souvenir Postal, World's Columbian Exposition. In 1872, new legislation made private postcards more expensive to mail (2 cents up from 1 cent) and prioritized government-issued cards. Government cards were the only ones that could legally say “Postal Card” and they cost 1 cent – half as much as private cards. This card is an example of such a card with a depiction of the Battle Ship “Illinois” on the front, along with the official seal of the exposition and the signatures of H. A. Higinbotham, President, and H. O. Edmonds, Secretary. Reverse side for address only. Printed stamp of Ulysses S. Grant
