- Postcard (color, divided back, 3 ½ x 5 ½ inches) titled Jack Dempsey Knocks Out Jess Willard – This postcard, illustrated by James Montgomery Flagg, depicts the boxing match in Toledo, Ohio, on July 4, 1919, where Jack Dempsey knocked out Jess Willard to become Champion of the World. Dempsey, born William Harrison Dempsey, was nicknamed Kid Blackie and The Manassa Mauler. He was an American professional bower and competed from 1914 to 1927. He reigned as the world heavyweight champion from 1919 to 1926. His fights set many financial and attendance records, including the first million dollar gate. He pioneered live broadcasting of sports events, especially boxing. Text on reverse: “May I Play Host and Say “Hello” to You in My Restaurant Where Food and Friendliness are Knockouts” On Broadway bet. 49th & 50th Sts., New York City.
