- Postcard (color, 3 ½ x 5 ½ inches) titled Valentine Greetings – This postcard features a sleeping man with a smiling dog on his chest. The original artwork is signed by R. F. Outcault. Richard Felton Outcault was born in Lancaster, Ohio in 1863. His formal education was at McMicker College and he later studied in Paris. He worked for the Electrical Railway Journal as a draftsman in the 1890’s. He drew comic pictures in his spare time. He submitted drawings to “Truth”, “Life” and “Judge” weekly journals. In 1894, he inaugurated the “funny paper” for the New York Herald with his first drawing entitled “The Origin of the Species”. Later he produced “Hogan’s Alley” and its hero, the Yellow Kid. His real success came when Buster Brown and his dog, Tige, appeared in the Herald. Buster Brown brought Outcault a fortune and companied from all over the world wanted his work. He also published several books on Buster Brown. Outcault retired from active work about 10 years before his death in 1928. No descriptive text on reverse. Postmarked: Boston, Mass., February 13 (no year) and Medford, Mass., February 14, 1906.
