- Description:
- Postcard (color, white border, divided back, 3 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches) titled: Flamingoes at the Mountain Lake Sanctuary, Near Lake Wales, Florida 16B. - Between 1926 and 1944 the Gardens was home to flamingoes however, Central Florida was not quite warm enough for the flamingoes during the winter. Text on reverse – Mr. Bok spared no expense to bring this Sanctuary and Singing Tower birds and flowers that would make the surroundings more beautiful. Nightingales have been brought from England because their song brings cheerfulness and happiness to those fortunate enough to visit this sanctuary. Flamingoes have also been imported in the hope that they would perhaps again settle into Florida. Years ago this beautiful bird was an inhabitant of Florida, but was driven out by the hunter and plumage seeker. Perhaps, however, they will thrive under the protection of the sanctuary. The scarlet Flamingo comes from Andros Island in Cuba, and the white flamingoes are from South America. Card number 128888.
