- Description:
- The Marble Marker on U.S. 301 near the Altamaha River. The only monument known to be in exhistence in honor of a lost flower. The Long County Garden Club placed the marker there in 1941; in memory of the Lost Franklinia Altamaha, which was discovered by John Bartram in 1765. He was a Royal Botanist to the King of England. The area covered by the blooming plant covered two or three acres, but on return trips there, it has never been found again, and is known as "The Lost Flower". John and William Bartram, father and son, kept complete records of their travels in the south. They carried specimen of the plant back to their garden in Philadelphia and the only plants known to be in existence today are those which came from his tree in Philadelphia. The marble marker is located near the Altamaha River about 18 miles north of the only place it was ever seen growing, which is near General Oglethorpe's Old Ford Barrington in McIntosh County.
