- Georgia Architectural and Historic Properties Survey of Quitman [338] 312 E. Screven, Valdosta, Ga. December 1980. Merchants & Farmers Bank. Slim, two story rectangular plan building. Flat roof. Brick. Granite facade (which has been replaced with modern structures on 1st floor) textured. An arcade of 3 pointed arched windows with pilasters. Date of Construction: c. 1898. Second bank to be organized in Quitman. Opened for business in April 1891. Dr. James McCall was the first president. The bank was located first in the Opera House (what is now City Hall) until this building was completed in 1898. In 1905, the bank went national and was renamed First National Bank. Since the bank left, the building has been used as a law office, a savings banks, and farmer's mutual. Significant as part of a potential National Register district, a downtown district of late 19th and early 20th century buildings.
