- Description:
- Tracy Stallings (1932-2008) was elected Democratic representative in 1994 for the 100th District, serving as vice chairman of the Banking Committee. The retired administrator of the University of West Georgia and mayor of Carrollton began his career in newspapers. He was a consultant with Southwire and maintained an office with the city of Carrollton until his death.; Interviewed by Dr. Mel Steely on May 29, 2001 at UWG-TV studios.; Stallings begins by giving a brief autobiographical story to provide an overview of what had been discussed with Dr. Steely during their last interview (09/22/99). After serving as mayor of Carrollton for nearly fourteen years, Stallings decided to pursue a legislative seat in the Senate, which he lost, and the House of Representatives, which he eventually won. Stallings talks about his legislative races, speaking at length of the difficulty of campaigning and the sorts of responsibilities that his position entails. The conversation moves to the topic of bipartisanship and the role of lobbyists in legislation. Stallings speaks of two governors he served with, Roy Barnes and Zell Miller, speaking of the personalities of each. He speaks of his own involvement with legislative issues, talking specifically about the timber industry in Georgia as well as banking and the University System of Georgia.
