- Description:
- Mack Francis Mattingly (1931 - ) served one term in the U.S. Senate from 1980-1986. The Republican senator's issues were trade and taxes, and he lost re-election in 1986. Mattingly was appointed U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of the Seychelles by President Bush in 1992. He made another unsuccessful bid for the U.S. Senate in 2000. He now resides on St. Simons Island, Georgia.; Interviewed by Dr. Mel Steely on June 28th, 1995 (probably at UWG-TV studio).; Dr. Steely begins the interview by mentioning Mattingly's last interview in 1992, when Mattingly had decided to not run for the Senate seat held by Fowler. Mattingly had, since last being interviewed, been appointed as U.S. ambassador to the Republic of Seychelles by President George H. W. Bush, and Mattingly goes on to describe the process by which he was appointed. He discusses conservative sway in politics, especially with regard to Gingrich and Coverdell. Mattingly goes on to discuss his ambassadorship further, discussing training for such a position, describing Seychelles and the people that he had worked with there. He describes the history of the government in Seychelles and the Marxist regime of President René that was in power when he arrived. While there a transition to a more democratically and liberalized economy was in the works and Mattingly consulted them on their constitution. At one point Mattingly notes that God has been good to him; Dr. Steely uses this as a segue to ask him about his faith and the rise of the religious right. As he goes into the Christian agenda for education, the education system of Seychelles is brought up as a topic of conversation, as is the foreign aid offered to Seychelles by the United States. Mattingly touches on the U.N.'s involvement with Seychelles and discusses issues in Somalia. The conversation then turns to former Yugoslavia and the EU and NATO's involvement in Bosnia. They then turn to talking about the threat of terrorism and Mattingly's opinion on the role of the UN and NATO in peacekeeping. Mattingly discusses his opinions of Bill Clinton and of the upcoming presidential election of 1996 as well as what it is he believes makes a good president. Mattingly closes the discussion by discussing President Bush and Newt Gingrich and the issue of taxes during Bush's presidency.
