In presenting a theme built around an old Southern
plantation the editors are not attempting to awaken
in you a desire for a return to the supposedly grace-
ful life of another era. We are thinking, rather, as
we see the old plantation house today, that we are
glad it is surrounded by busy Southern boys and
girls, dormitories, classrooms, shops and a library
instead of its former slave quarters.

Mu Zeta Atpha

The Mu Zeta Alpha is an honorary club for people who have shown special ability
and interest in the various fields of science. It is organized for the purpose of promoting
interest in scientific fields, to develop student leadership, to give medium to student
expression and to promote scholarship through the scientific method.

Mu Zeta has moved forward in accomplishing its purposes this year by promoting
interest in amateur photography and carrying on an intensive campaign of public health
education with talks and moving pictures on diseases and panel discussions of the Ellis
Health Law. An interesting variety of programs and entertaining socials have been
given to the members.

year, "Children in a democracy and their relation to housing and consumer buying,"

In dealing with its theme for this year,
Propaganda, Zeta Sigma Pi has earnestly
endeavored to carry out its three aims: inves-
tigation, discussion, action. An immediate
and practical application of the knowledge
gained has been the goal of the organization.
Zeta Sig has attempted to carry over the
spirit of its "Round Table Forums" into its
work in the Forum Council. Its success in
the sponsoring of "Club Night" exemplifies
the standing of Zeta Sigma Pi as a campus

VARSITY

The 1940 Braves, coached by Rhea Taylor, won 11 of 17 scheduled games, boasting
one of the best records in the history of the college.

They won the Carrollton city championship by defeating the Carrollton Redskins
four out of five games. They advanced to the second round of the Junior College
Tournament but were defeated by the strong G. M. C. team.

The team was formed around lettermen Seth Whittemore, Glenn Whittemore,
Earle Griffin and Hubert Brooks.

The first team was composed of the Whittemore brothers, Earl Griffin, Daniel
Rogers, and Edgar Padgett. These were backed by an unusually strong second team.

Glenn Whittemore dropped in 180 points to lead the team in scoring. He was fol-
lowed by Edgar Padgett, Captain Seth Whittemore, and Daniel Rogers with 160, 119,
141 respectively.

Outstanding players on the second team were Griffin, Blackwell, Brooks, Denton,
Stinson, and Gosden.

The 1940-41 team will be headed by Captain Daniel Rogers, and lettermen Black-
well and Gosden.

Varsity Basketball

The college this year sponsored for the first time a girls' intercollegiate team. Coached
by Kennon Henderson, they uon three of their eight games.

7 he first team consisted of Captain Lucy Burgess, Martha Brown, Rozelle Hyatt,
Melba Morgan, Nancy Smith, and Jane ^McCain. Other outstanding players were
Hilda Seagraves, Margaret Williams, Lois Floyd, Frances Pike, Hazel Marks, and
Katherine Hooks.

Since most of the team is returning, a much stronger one for 1940-41 is expected.

fFA Basketball

West Georgia's newly formed F. F. A. team sponsored a basketball team for the 1939-
40 season, winning nine of their fourteen games against strong competition. The team
was composed oi Sherman Eley, captain; Merlin Rogers, Kontz Acree and Ralph
Pitchford, forwards; John Mason and Roy Acree, centers; Hershel Williamson, Davis
Dodson, Charles Morris and Fred Seymour, guards; and Mather Hyatt, manager.

Eley's brilliant shooting and JMascn's passing led the offense. Charles Morris,
Hershel Williamson and Merlin Rogers proved very satisfactory at the defensive posts.
Most of the men are returning to build an even better team next vear.

Speedball

The 11:40 class won the 1939 season speedball championship, defeating the 8:00 and 1:30
classes. Those receiving letters were Arnold Stark, captain ; Mather Hyatt, Mack Stinson, Red
Blackwell, Hershel Williamson, Bill Alexander, John Garrett, Fred Hammond, Roy Acree,
Ralph Skinner, Lovvorn Jones and Travis Ellison.

Baseball

The 1939 Braves were coached by Rhea Taylor. Due to an incomplete schedule and a lack of
pitching strength, the Braves lost four of their five sciieduled games. The only lettermen re-
turning were Tom Luck and V. M. Almon. The team was led in hitting by Crowder, Garrett,
and Almon.

The 1940 team will be formed around returning lettermen Hubert Brooks, Bill Alexander,
and Robert Milam. The team will be coached by Burch Wilcox, former university athlete.

FOURTH DISTRICT A. & M. SCHOOL, WHICH OPENED ITS DOORS IN
JANUARY, 1908, WITH J. H. MELSON AS PRINCIPAL FOR MORE THAN A
QUARTER OF A CENTURY GEORGIA SUPPORTED AN AGRICULTURAL
BOARDING SCHOOL ON THE PRESENT CAMPUS WHERE THE OUTLINE OF A
TRACK FOR HORSE RACING AND A LARGE GRAND STAND CAN STILL BE
SEEN. MANY PARENTS OF THE PRESENT STUDENT BODY SAW HERE THEIR
FIRST AEROPLANE ENCLOSED IN A TENT, FOR A PRICE OF TWENTY-FIVE
CENTS ADMISSION. ![ AMERICA'S ENTRY INTO THE WORLD WAR IN 1917
BROUGHT SADNESS TO THE CAMPUS AS MANY STUDENTS. ALUMNI, AND
FACULTY JOINED THE ARMY. FOR TWO YEARS MILITARY TRAINING WAS
PART OF THE CURRICULUM. V/HEN PEACE CAME THERE WERE GOLD STARS
IN THE SCHOOL'S SERVICE FLAG. H THE A. & M. SCHOOL SURVIVED THE
"BOLL-WEEVIL DEPRESSION" OF 1920 AT WHICH TIME I. S. INGRAM BECAME
ITS HEAD. WHEN FARM PRICES COLLAPSED IN THE LATE NINETEEN THIRTIES
AND CONSOLIDATED HIGH SCHOOLS BEGAN TO SPRING UP EVERYWHERE.
OVERLAPPING THE WORK OF THE A. & M. SCHOOU THERE WAS A DIRE
NEED FOR A REVISION OF ORGANIZATION AND OBJECTIVES. THE
NEWLY-CREATED BOARD OF REGENTS TOOK OVER THE DEEDS TO THE
PROPERTY IN 1932 AND DURING THE FOLLOWING YEAR AipOLLEGE OF
JUNIOR RANK OPENED ITS DOORS TO APPROXIMATELY 200^UDENTS. THE
LOCATION OF THIS YOUNGEST INSTITUTION OF THE UNIVERSITY SYSTEM OF
GEORGIA WAS IN THE GEOGRAPHIC CENTER OF THE LAST BRACE OF NEW
COUNTIES CREATED IN GEORGIA FROM THE CREEK AND CHEROKEE LANDS.
THE PRESENT 450 STUDENTS ARE FOR THE MOST PART DESCENDANTS OF
THOSE LAST GEORGIA PIONEERS WHO CROSSED THE FLINT AND THE
CHATTAHOOCHEE MORE THAN A HUNDRED YEARS AGO. THE COLLEGE
ITSELF IS A PIONEER IN A CERTAIN TYPE OF EDUCATION. AMONG OTHER
THINGS IT IS DEDICATED TO THE TASK OF UPBUILDING RURAL GEORGIA
SOCIALLY, CULTURALLY, AND ECONOMICALLY THROUGH ITS UNIQUE
PROGRAM OF RURAL TEACHER-TRAINING. IN THIS IT HAS RECEIVED SOME
NATIONAL RECOGNITION AND SOME LASTING ENCOURAGEMENT. SINCE
1937 THE ROSENWALD FUND HAS BEEN AN IMPORTANT FACTOR IN AN
EFFORT TO ACHIEVE ITS OBJECTIVES. THROUGH COOPERATION WITH THE
CHANCELLOR AND THE BOARD OF REGENTS, jj LOT NUMBER 99 STILL FILLS
ITS PLACE IN THE SOCIAL FABRIC OF THE TIMES. ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO
IT WAS A FRONTIER OF RIBALD STAB8INGS, OF LUSTY WEATHER-BEATEN
FARMERS. TODAY IT IS ONE OF THE FOREMOST EDUCATIONAL FRONTIERS
OF THE SOUTH.
