Foreword

Each and every one of us is different,
yet one term is commonly used to describe all
of us college student. Our college is
West Georgia. West Georgia is an institution
for higher learning . . . it is meeting new people . .
joing clubs and organizations . . . becoming a
member of a tribe . . . Playing bridge in the lounge
participating in varsity spots. However, it
is something more, and it is this intangible
substance that the staff of this yearbook cannot
quite describe. Consequently, we are presenting
to you, the heart and soul of West Georgia College,
a pictorial review of the 1962-63 year and leaving
it up to you to take and decide for yourself just
what West Georgia is.

recognized as one of the highest honorary societies to which a

The 1963 Chieftain salutes outstanding students at
West Georgia College. Represented in iJiis year's select
group are five Seniors, five Juniors, five Sophomores,
and four Freshmen. These students are carefully nom-
inated by a student-faculty committee, and then voted
on by the student body. These are the students who give
freely of their time to worthwhile school activities, are
outstanding in leadership and scholarship, and whose
past record gives them a promise of future usefulness.
The 1963 Chieftain salutes these students and all others
who, because of their attitudes and activities, deserve

West Georgia College

Dear Students:

Cordial greetings to all of you! It has been a great pleas-
ure to work and play with you and the faculty at West
Georgia College tliis year. Together, we are building a
great college in Carrollton. And, I hope that this experience
in living, learning and growing together is proving as stimu-
lating and rewarding for you as for me.

West Georgia College is growing in many ways. It is
growing in quantity; i.e., in the numbers of students, faculty,
programs, and buildings. But, of far greater importance is
its growth in quality, particularly in the quality of faculty
and students. I wish to take this opportunity to commend
jyou for your growth, for the greater maturity and sense
of responsibility you are showing in your attitudes, activi-
ties, relationships and studies this year. It appears to me
:that you are taking better advantage of your opportunities
jto develop your capacities for self -fulfillment and service
ito others. You are showing a greater desire to learn, a more
inquiring and open mind, more ability to think for yourself
land to work with others. You are developing into men and
women who will be assets to your state and country.
I

Congratulations to you who will graduate this year. You Best wishes to all of you for continued success and happi-
are receiving your degree from a great institution, one you ness in your endeavors,
{will be proud of in the future. I hope that you will keep in

jclose touch with us through the Alumni Association, that Sincerely,

you will continue to help us build, and that you will return James E. Boyd

to the campus as often as possible. President

BRAVE BASKETBALL TEAM ON ROAD TO TOP

Steve Bridges was honored by being elected captain of the
basketball team. Steve is only a sophomore.

The West Georgia basketball team, guided by the promising
leadership of Coach Howard Corder and two outstanding junior
transfers, made another big stride this season toward court
recognition in the Georgia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Ron Underiener, with a 16.3 average per game in scoring,
and Bill Shotwell with a 15.7 average, sparked the Braves to a
7-11 over-all season record and a 6-4 finish in the conference.

When Coach Howard Corder took the reigns of head basket-
ball tutor last year, the Braves were accustomed to nothing better
than the cellar position in the conference. His first season with
the Braves found them jumping into the fifth place spot, and
this season they moved up to third.

With his entire team returning for another tour of duty next
year, and a promising crew of freshmen moving into the varsity
category, Coach Corder feels that the Braves will be one of the
best, if not the best, teams in the conference next season.

In addition to the return of standouts, Underiener and Shot-
well, Coach Corder will also have David Brookins, Dudley
Eubanks, Steve Bridges, and Dan Lee back for another session.

Brookins averaged 10.1 points in scoring during the past
season, followed by Eubanks with a 9.5 average. Bridges with
a 6.2 average, and Lee with a 6.0 average.

Other members of the past season squad who Coach Corder
feels will boost the Braves' chances for a championship in the
coming season are Chuck Miller, Gene Ginn, Billy Dills, and
Ken Mclnnis.

Braves Rewrite Record Book

The statistics have been revealed regarding the national rec-
ognition achieved by the West Georgia Braves in the '62
baseball season. Since then, an official report has been received
from the National Association for Intercollegiate Athletics
offering the year's compiled statistics.

Another detailed report from the Georgia Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference was also received by Coach Tom D'Armi
stating the standings held in conference by the Braves.

These reports would indicate a record-breaking year for
the Braves from start to finish. On a local, state, and national
basis, the Braves experienced one of the most successful years
in school history.

The first record-breaker on the books was in all-conference

selectees. Six of the starting nine Braves were named to the
top ranks in the conference and the remaining three received
honorable mention.

This was the largest number of representatives from a single
team to ever make the honor list in a single season. Selection
for the all-conference team was based on ballots from oppos-
ing conference coaches.

Another first in the record books at West Georgia is the title
of Conference Champions as a senior college.

Coach D'Armi, being awarded the citation as conference
"Coach of the Year," became the first West Georgia baseball
coach to be so honored.

144

On Baseball Diamond for '62

Another top accomplishment was their won and lost record
in conference play, 8-0, which is the best recorded in the GIAC
record books.

Other top honors held in the conference by the Braves in
'62 include: best team defensive; best hitting average; best
pitching record; led in number of stolen bases; most total
runs; and best earned run average held by pitchers.

The '62 seasonal record of 13-2 posted by the Braves was
the best in the nation for a senior college. This record is also
the best recorded by a GIAC team in the history of the con-
ference.

In national recognition, the Braves ranked eighth in the
nation's small colleges in team batting with an average of .332.

The Braves finished twelfth in the nation in team pitching
in the earned run category. Their pitching staff gave up an
average of 2.28 earned runs per game.

A team that became famous for their running game by the
end of the season, the Braves finished third in the nation in
team stolen bases.

The Braves stole an amazing total of 96 bases in their 15
games for an average of close to seven per game. Out of this
total, nine of the steals were at home plate.

In the individual stolen base category. Brave centerfielder,
Bill Davis, finished eighth in the nation with 19 steals in the
15 game schedule.

145

West Georgia's '62 Championship baseball
team had six out of their nine starters listed
on the all-conference team. In addition to
this, Coach Tom D'Armi was named the Con-
ference Baseball Coach of the Year.

A rather unusual result, which speaks well
for the Brave pitching staff, was the selection
of two pitchers, Rocks Hudgins and Jim Par-
tain, to the all-conference team.

Three infielders were named to the select
list of stars for their action on the diamond.
These were Ronnie Burchfield, catcher; Wyatt
Webb, first baseman; and Steve Norris, third
baseman. Bill Davis, centerfielder, was the
only representative from the outfield.

MEN'S
INTRAMURALS

at

West Georgia College

In the Intramural Sports Program, the number of intramural
games played and the student participation record, the West
Georgia College men's program has high national ranking
among colleges of similar size. This information is based on
the 1961-62 official report of the National Association of In-
tramural Directors which periodically publishes the statistics

152

concerning college and university intramural programs. The
total number participating in the fall quarter, 1962-63, showed
an increase over the total for the fall quarter of 1961-62.

The organization and development of the men's intramural
sports program is directed by Coach Tom D'Armi, who states

that intramurals and a good physical education program are
equally as important as varsity sports. Goal of the program is
to stimulate participation not only for recreational purposes
but also for the development and continuation of physical fit-

ness.

153

Intramural managers of the Mens Athletic Association. These men are responsible for each tribe showing up for
each event and ivere selected as leaders of their tribes.

M.A.A. Football gets into full swing with the Shawnee being one of the most colorful teams in the league. Here they
put the pressure on the Mohawks.

R. Kingston cuts around end with J. Carpenter leading interference.

Ronnie Scott closes in on Gary Turner as he goes for a
short gain against the champion Apaches.

155

APACHES maintain form in '63 to repeat as over-all intramural champions. The APACHES will keep the Big Trophy until next year.

WOMEN'S INTRAMURALS

Enthusiam, sportsmanship, and competition make the women's intra-
mural program at West Georgia College one of the best in the state.
The women learn new skills and earn points for awards on both tribe
and individual basis. Soccer, volleyball, basketball, softball, bowl-
ing, and tennis are enjoyed by many girls on a tribe basis. Bad-
minton, table tennis, bridge, horseshoes, and hopscotch are participated
in on an individual basis.

Editor's
Epitaph

The faces you see in on these pages represent
all of you. You are the ones for whom this Chief-
tain was published. You are the ones whom we
will look to for criticism, either good or bad.

This is being written just before the last copy
pages will leave the campus. After months of
diligent work, we are happy to see them leave
our hands. It has been difficult putting these
pages together getting pictures, copy, cutlines,
etc. But it has been fun. It's an experience we'll
never quite forget.

Many, many persons are responsible for get-
ting out the college yearbook. If we didn't ex-
press our appreciation, the Chieftain wouldn't
be complete.

To the advisors, administrative, faculty, and
staff members we certainly want to say thanks.

To W. H. Smith who did an excellent job as
the 1963 Beauty Revue Director, we certainly
want to express our appreciation. To the photog-
raphers, and especially to you the student body
we want to say thank you.

It is our hope that each and everyone of you
will be satisfied with the 1963 Chieftain and,
as another year of history at West Georgia is re-
corded in this yearbook, will take and decide for
yourself the question proposed in the Foreword,
"What is West Georgia?"

Wanda Vickery
Editor-in-Chief
1963 Chieftain
