DR. WILLIAM H. ROW
IN MEMORIAM
For his concern and interest In the welfare of each
indi\ic1ual,
For his dedication to the higlicst ideals of education,
For his counsel, his friendship, and his understanding,
For the major role he has played in making West
Georgia College the outstanding institution that it is
today,
For all these reasons and others, we dedicate this volume,
the Chieftain of 1961, to the new President of West
Georgia College, Dr. William H. Row.
West Georgia, where we spent the years . . .
Time, preserved by memory, is like a gull caught in the wind . . . the crackling quilt across the campus in fall
. . . the warm hand of a new friend . . . the face of a stranger, now familiar . . . the finiteness of being new
and confused . . . the whack of ball against racket in the still air of weekend tranquility . . . the silly little boy
with a duck in a white fountain . . . the thud of feet on the gymnasium floor . . . the stimulating clash of idea
and ignorance . . . the shy goodnight of a pretty girl . . . the enthusiasm of holiday exodus and the mixed
emotions of return . . . the beckoning warmth of Gunn House in a rainstorm . . . the blare of hi-fi and the
silence of an empty dorm . . . time preserved by memory, is like a gull caught in the wind . . .

leges is nationally recognized as one of the highest
honorary societies to which a student can belong.
Only Seniors who meet the qualifications of leader-
ship, scholarship, participation in campus activities,

The West Georgia College Campus was taken by surprise
early on the morning of October 11, 1960 when two coura-
geous upperclassmen shot down an R-2 plane which was
"endeavoring to obtain information now concealed behind
the Ivy Curtain of the college." At that minute all upper-
classmen realized the serious threat that the dirty rat creatures
presented. The strong upperclassmen forces were soon or-
ganized and the threat was immediately eliminated. The
lowly rats were forced to entertain the upperclassmen and
faculty at a Rat Talent Show and then were put to hard
labor on work day in punishment for their many dirty deeds.
The show-down came on October 13, the day of "Rat Court"
when the lowly rats paid in full for their attempted invasion
of our quiet little campus. All debts being paid in full, the
rats were liberated and declared full-fledged members of
West Georgia's student body.

WEST GEORGIAN
Since the first: years of the college the student news-
paper has been noted as one of the finest small college
newspapers in the South. The West Georgian is firmly
devoted to the best interest of the college and the stu-
dents. It stresses expression, student solutions to prob-
lems, and campus relations. Its purpose is not only to
inform but to educate and to entertain. The 1960-61

VOLLEYBALL
Volleyball is a sport enjoyed by men and women alike
at W.G.C. Physical education classes and tribes join in
the fun during winter quarter. West Georgia is well
represented by our women at the Georgia Amateur

BADMINTON
Badminton is a spring sport which gives those who
do not play tennis or softball an opportunity to par-
ticipate and receive points in their W.A.A. activities.
They are expecting an interesting season in the Bad-

SOFTBALL
Every spring quarter one notices several girls on
the lower field with gloves and someone batting a
ball around. Of course these are tribe members
warming up for the softball intramurals.
82
TENNIS
Tennis is one of tlie favorite W.A.A. intramural
sports, and as Spring rolls around so do the tennis balls.
Although it is a spring sport the W.A.A. sponsored an
independent tournament early in the fall. It was a
successful affair with Terry McNabb taking first place
and Susan Finney finishing in second place.

ADMINISTRATION
Dr. I. S. Ingram
President Emeritus
PRESIDENT ROW'S MESSAGE
Dr. Row passed away March 10, 1961. This letter to the
students was written by him several weeks before this time.
Dear Students:
Through this medium I send you personal greetings. I
find myself wishing for the abilities of a great writer that
I might convey the sincere feelings of concern, respect, inter-
est, and love that I hold for you.
You are the product of this institution and whatever you
become, so becomes West Georgia College. This may sound
like a selfish interest but it is not meant in that manner. As
President Emeritus Ingram stated in last year's Chieftain, it
is the purpose of this institution to instruct and inspire to
the end that you might acquire characteristics of simplicity,
honesty, humility, competency, curiosity, and the search for
truth, and a healthful respect for the dignity of every indi-
vidual, as well as to prepare you academically for your life's
work. We can accomplish these goals only to the extent to
which we have real feelings of concern, respect, interest, and
love for you. The profile of our graduates through the years
assures us that this feeling has been sincere and productive.
West Georgia College has many distinct and worthy tradi-
tions, goals, and achievements that were established by my
predecessor and the outstanding staffs he attracted through
the years. The institution inevitably will grow, despite the
fact that we would prefer to remain small; but it is my dedi-
cated intent that we will build upon and be guided by these
goals that already have been established. Enrollment will
change, fields will be added, services will be extended. But
our product, which is you, will always have the worthy char-
acteristics nientioned above.
Please know that all of us on the staff have a profound
interest in each of you. We are anxious to follow your
progress, and we will be greatly pleased if you will keep us
advised as to your activities in the years ahead.
Sincerely,
WILLIAM H. ROW

EDITOR'S EPITAPH
To those like Ronnie and Dot
who work without being pushed.
To those like Margie
who take pictures in the rain.
To those like Pat
who work on the week-ends.
To those like Bivian
who walk the streets selling ads.
To those like Lee
who never refuse to work.
To those like Mr. Shaw
who listen without laughing.
To those like Nellie
who sit up until 3 A.M.
I give my thanks.
We are finished now the rest is left to you, the student
body. We have done our best and feel that we have
produced a good book. We hope you will love it as
we do accept it, bad points as well as good, and
make it a part of yourself as it is meant to be. What
you have done, it has done; what you have said, it
has said; where you have been, it has been. It records
your joys and sorrows, your likes and dislikes, your
leaders and followers, your strengths and weaknesses.
It is what you are.
