foreword . . .
Memories are the thoughts of yesterday. They represent the actions of
time passed when we were younger and a little more foolish than wise.
Memories symbolize the things we were going to do and the things we did.
They are passed days of bliss and fantasy when frolic was our candy and
work our poison. They are the faded dreams, the lost wishes, and the mis-
placed intentions.
From all the sad, the happy, the warm we grow to realize that every
day is a page that soon becomes a book of memories.
The 1957 CHIEFTAIN is a book of memories, our memories of WEST
GEORGIA COLLEGE.

... AS SPOKEN SO OFTEN BY
HAROLD CLYDE STEELE
a man devoted to his "call" to teach the facts of human biology and the "quali-
ties beyond the written page." Always striving to meet the challenge of per-
fection in life, he earnestly endeavors to set forth an example of a mature,
Christian man.
It is, therefore, with respect and admiration that the 1957 CHIEFTAIN is
dedicated to Harold Clyde Steele, our teacher and friend.

school after a summer of new thrills, to find
that West Georgia College had not changed
as much as they had changed.
They laughed to themselves as they remem-

arrived as freshmen. How things had changed
since then! !
Now, they were looking forward to an event-

RECORDS A YEAR AT
WEST GEORGIA COLLEGE
Our lights have burned long into the nights; our
nerves have run thin; and our ideas have collided,
but from it all has come a product of work, sacrifice
and compromise, the 1957 Chieftain. We hope that
it will be worthy of our time and will be your pride
and joy.

Who is she, boys? Someone we know?
You read. I'll study and we will all fail
that exam together!
We eat in the morning, we eat
at noon, and we eat in the
evening . . .
And then we spend all our money
on what we eat at night.
. . . and we remember how we traveled the worn path to the Coke machine and fed it
our nickels as we fed ourselves . . . We remember those exams and those shocking grades
but not as shocking as our parents' reactions . . .
We have lived, laughed, and learned as we have spent our days at West Georgia Col-
lege. We have had our doubts and fulfillments; discouragements and satisfactions. We have
had more problems and less sleep than we have had money and spare time, but we have
loved every minute of it.
We must leave behind us the familiar gray walks, the ivy windows, the rolling hills,
and all the little things that have made West Georgia so close to our hearts. We leave, but
we take our memories with us. They are ours to cherish and to be with us always.
"Good-bye and thank you" to all who have made our days worthwhile our teachers,
our administrators, our classmates and
