Dr. D. F. Folger, Dean of Instruction, has
done much toward raising the standards of
West Georgia College within the past
years. He has undertaken the responsibili-
ties of his position with real interest and
understanding. By his willingness to help
and to cooperate with the students and by
his complete understanding of them, he
has won a host of friends among the stu-
dent body.

Through years of honest, intelligent lead-
ership. Dean W. Fred Gunn has built for
himself a name for character, integrity and
foresight. Mr. Gunn has served capably as
Dean of West Georgia College since its
founding, and as registrar for the past
eight years. He is a man indeed worthy of
praise.

TRAINING SHOPS

During the past year, the college has operated a General Machine and Wood Shop
up on the hill as a contribution to the war effort. It has complete and up-to-date
equipment, the operation of which has served a dual purpose one, the production of
certain war materials such as bomb and rocket boxes, and metal utilities for the armed
forces; two, to give practical training in machine shop operation to college students
who have registered for this work. The college has acquired full ownership of the
shops and tools and they are now operated by the college as a training department.
Under the supervision of Mr. Parker Bedingfield, the vocational staff is laying plans
for a greater program of education after the war, offering thorough and efficient train-
ing to industrial workers and supervisors. Working with Mr. Bedingfield in the
vocational education program are: Mrs. Benelle Barbee, bookkeeper; J. W. Fountain,
War Production Engineer; F. C. Herrell, Sheet Metal Foreman; J. M. King, Machine
Shop Foreman; and J. B. Stallings, Wood Shop Foreman.

Regardless of the fact that the sophomores are unusually small in number this
year we feel that the quality fully compensates for the quantity. We have accom-
plished many new experiences this year with fellow students, faculty members and
numerous activities aside from our regular curriculum. Some of the boys who are
seen here are now serving with the Armed Forces. Our best wishes are with every
member of the sophomor class of 1945 in whatever they may undertake throughout
their lives.

THE FRESHMEN

September school days, "elevate your obligatum '
week, choir try-outs, week-end recreations in the
gym, church parties, club socials, choir concerts,
school dances and most important of all classes
and exams.

This is just a brief review of a freshman's school
year calendar. There is more to it than meets the
eye. But it's all so much fun this cycle of one's
first year in college.

Remember those medical exams and gay, warm
afternoons when we all went to town, those mid-
night snacks and parties, that week that came three
times a year when there was a "candle burning"
and "brain shortage." All of this belongs in the
life of a freshman, and West Georgia freshmen are
no exceptions.

JUNIORS

Being Juniors at W. G. C. has been fun, hasn't it? We've acquired more knowledge and experience;
we've worked hard, long, and regularly, but it's been exciting, too. During our freshman and sopho-
more years we had worked with books, skills and drills, paving the way for an exciting junior year.
This year we have learned by "doing," as well as through books. ,

Let's take a brief backward glance at this year's activities:

painting, which seems a "must" for all Third Year groups;

dying curtains, which seems to have been a "Third Year Specialty" (especially "yellow" ones) ;

attending Seminors each Monday night, where we discussed problems of mutual interest, heard
music recordings, and read poems and other literature;

reading and evaluating books of various types;

keeping diaries and records of our work;

doing practice teaching and interne teaching, where we really faced teachers' problems and
coped with them, getting most valuable experiences;

learning rural problems and ways of meeting them through community meetings and socials in
which we took part;

putting new life into the old station wagon by covering and painting it (and thank goodness, it
turned out swell in spite of our "skepticism!") ;

taking trips (especially the one to Parker Schools in Greenville, S. C, and to Clemson Col-
lege ) ;

folk dancing each Wednesday night;

taking school census in the county;

giving screening and hearing tests in the county schools and keeping records of these, as well as
giving the achievement tests in the various schools.

Our future? With experience in these many activities, it's bound to be a "bright" future. We'll
probably be found five years from now teaching in schools which will reflect our former training at
W. G. C. There'll be socials, community meetings, cooperatives, and a combination of "book-learn-
ing" and "activity" in our schools. We will always be anxious to know what W. G. C. Juniors of
future years will be doing.

The West Georgian is a student publication issued bi-monthly. This newspaper
was organized in 1933 when the college itself first began, and has kept up a steady
pace throughout these thirteen years.

Proving its worth through work, the West Georgian has won honor rating four
times as one of the outstanding junior college newspapers in the nation.

All members of the student body are members of the Voluntary Religious Asso-
ciation. The activity of the association is guided by a selected group, the V. R. A.
Council. The council is composed of twenty-five members selected yearly from appli-
cants who are interested in spiritual activities. The council has a reputation for
active and effective work. It endeavors to help every student maintain a closer spirit-
ual life while in college and to form standards helpful in future life.

The West Georgia A Cappella Choir provides satisfying experience to students
possessing interest and talent in music and supplies appropriate music for various
needs on the campus and surrounding communities. During the year the choir gives
concerts on the campus and in schools throughout this area of the state. This provides
opportunities for developing leadership in group singing and church choir activities.

The Democratic Youth Society was organized in
December. 1944. It is the youngest club on the
campus. Since the main activity of the club has
been sponsoring speakers for chapel, it has thereby

Alpha Psi is composed of girls interested in home making and in ways of improving that art. At the
beginning of each new year, Alpha Psi names its own objectives and expected accomplishments, taking into
consideration the possibilities of fulfilling these aims. Some of its activities are: Alpha Psi dance. May Day
Festival, sponsoring of Christmas tree for under-privileged children, and acting as hostess for various meet-
ings. The club is affiliated with the state and national Home Economics club.

Science Club." Zeta Sig has achieved its purpose of carrying out the spirit of its round table forums, panel
discussions, and quiz programs. Its success in sponsoring Stunt Night exemplifies the standing of Zeta Sigma
Pi as a leading campus organization.

The Baptist Student Union is the union of religious organizations for Baptist youth in school. Serving
as the connecting link between the campus and local churches, it encourages enrollment in Sunday Schools

El Circulo Espanol was first organized in November, 1942. It is composed of students interested in the
practice of Spanish and becoming familiar with the customs, culture and arts of Spain and Spanish Amer-
ica. Its aim is to strengthen the bond of friendship between Spanish-speaking countries and ours.

The Spanish Club for this year has sponsored recreation in the gym, been hostess to picture show parties,
and presented numerous musical programs.

The "500" Club is composed of members of the "WAA" and "W Clubs who have
won 500 points or more in the various athletic activities.

Every woman on the campus automatically becomes a member of the "WAA's".
Recognition is on a point system. Those earning the required number of points are
entitled to wear the letter, and those earning a prescribed greater number are awarded
pins.

The "W" Club is composed of men who have proved their athletic ability by the ac-
cumulation of 500 or more points.

- The purpose of these clubs is to stimulate interest in athletics and to set an example

The Dramatics Club is composed of those students who show ability in both acting and the producing of
plays.

The West Georgia Dramatics Club usually gives two or three evening programs on the campus during
the college year and occasionally takes plays "'on tour" in schools. The main play that was presented this
year was "Grandpa Goes to College."

During the winter quarter at West Georgia College the Physical Education program is centered around has-
ketball. Although it has been almost impossible to compete with other colleges. West Georgia has carried
out a full intramural program with tournaments between classes and some outside games. From various
competing teams a varsity consisting of Freshmen and Sophomores was chosen.

With two of the 1943-44 regulars returning to school this year, Coach Bowen had a beginning for a very
good team.

Marvin Acree, forward, and G. B. Wright, center, were the two veterans returning from last year. Ably
assisting them this year were: Jack Dempsey, Vinson Estes, Dudley Crosson, and Herman Lanier, forwards;
Eugene McWhorter, center, and Edward Johnson, Rudolph Murphy, Carl Stephens, and Howard Martin,
guards.

The boys administered defeats to the Sewell quintet and the Hubbard Pants Company, both of Bremen,
and the Grantville Athletic Club, Grantville, dividing two games with Hubbard.

West Georgia bowed twice to the Martha Berry College of Rome, a game being played at each college.

With Murphy, Martin, and Stephens on the sidelines due to the army and results of the game with Hub-
bard, the Blue and White five met the fighting Carrollton Redskins on the home court. The Redskins
stepped out and won during the latter part of the game.

Throughout the entire season excellent sportsmanship and co-operation were given.

Spring on West Georgia Campus brings flowers, birds, and budding trees. It also
brings the Queen of May and her court, who with the student body reign supreme.
Following the crowning of the Queen, dances are given by the girls' physical edu-
cation classes, who are dressed in costumes of different lands.
