ACKNOWLEDGMENT
The theme of this annual is Mod-
ern Science. All the drawings for
this theme were graciously given
by Mrs. Thomas A. Hart. The Staff
is deeply indebted to her for the
co-operation and interest she has
shown in this student publication.
The title page represents the
four basic sciences: physics, biol-
ogy, chemistry, and astronomy.
The six division pages have as their
titles:
COMMUNICATION
TRANSPORTATION
INDUSTRY
TRAVEL
EXPLORATION
ACHIEVEMENT IN MEDICAL
SCIENCE
'ioh^ FOREWORD
As a scientist records all data
in an experinnent for the 30od
and pleasure of present and
future generations, so we re-
cord in this, the second vol-
ume of the CHIEFTAIN, ma-
terial of the present. Herein
we hope lies the value of this
book in days to come.
DEDICATION
To Robert M. Strozier, who
has been a wholesome influ-
ence on the lives of the stu-
dents, who has shown patient
interest and sympathetic un-
derstanding in their welfare,
who has won their high regard
and esteem, the Staff in
grateful appreciation of his
valuable guidance dedicates
this second volume of the
CHIEFTAIN.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
To West Georgia Students:
I am sure you join me in congratulating the staff of
the Chieftain on this edition of the annual. This beau-
tiful work is indicative of the many phases of student
life at West Georgia. Around the photographs, scenes
and suggestions, your memories will ever recall happy
and pleasant experiences.
The students at Carrollton have been a select group.
Their support of and their faith in this young institu-
tion together with the work of a thoroughly prepared
and energetic faculty have placed West Georgia Col-
lege in a coveted rank among the nation's Junior Col-
leges.
To the great number of graduates this year, it is
known that you have the best wishes and the benedic-
tion of the institution. In fact, you are the institution.
As you go your several ways, you will only broaden the
campus and influence of the college. For after all our
task is "the progressive development of individuals to
take their place in and improve society."
Irvine S. Ingram, President.

I ATHLETICS
ATHLETIC PROGRAM
We conceive physical education today to be recreation instead of
an undesirable task to be done. It is our desire to:
1. To furnish students activities in which they can relax;
2. To acquaint the students with the whole field of recreation
rather than just specialized participation;
3. To give the student an opportunity to find an activity that he
may carry over into after life;
4. To encourage the finest form of co-operative relationships in
those who are taking part in the activity;
5. To give the student a part in the running of the whole pro-
gram.
The program of physical education can be likened to a pyramid.
The broad base represents the participation of all students in some
form of recreational activity. The apex represents those students who
attain exceptional excellence in any particular form of recreation.
These should have a chance to test their skill with those outside their
group. Thus extra-collegiate activity will have a place.
Our physical education is organized on the plan of the athletic
committee which acts in an advisory capacity to the director. The
actual program is governed by the board of student managers. Each
manager is entirely responsible for the activity which he manages.
This year included in the program are: touch football, soccer,
basket-ball, tennis, horseshoes, wrestling, tumbling, volley ball, cro-
quet, handball, fencing, archery, boxing, ping-pong, Indian batball,
hiking, group dancing, speedball, golf, gymnastics and riflery.
The personnel includes the director, who is the co-ordinator, su-
pervisor, and resource man; three student assistants, who do clerical
work; the board of managers, their assistants, and the student body
of approximately three hundred.
Physical education ideally conceived is education through partic-
ipation in athletic activities. We are doing our best to do this at
West Georgia College.
