This Society was organized in 1976 in Carrollton, Georgia, for
the purpose of preserving local records and evaluating and sharing
such records with persons who have a liking for genealogy. Member¬
ship is open to all persons who are interested in genealogy in
Carroll County and surrounding areas, or a person living anywhere
who has roots in Carroll County or an interest in the founding
fathers and history of the County. This Society does not assume
responsibility for errors in fact or opinion which may appear in
articles furnished by its members. We will gladly correct any
errors brought to our attention.

Dear Members,
I am happy to report that our Society is growing in
membership and we are very much encouraged by the growth in
attendance at our meetings.
Our Program Committee is doing a very good job in
arranging our programs. At our March meeting, Mr. Buford C.
Arnold of Cartersville spoke on "Early Migrations," which
was most interesting. We met with Mr. Myron House at the
West Georgia College Library for our April meeting. This
was both interesting and informative. We are most fortunate
to have Mr. Ted 0. Brooke of Marietta, Georgia, coming to
speak to us at our meeting on May 2?. Mr. Brooke is a
Certified Record Searcher and author of the book "In the Name
of God, Amen — Georgia Wills 1733-1860." his subject will
be "Confederate Research in Georgia." I urge all members in
this area to attend this meeting and bring an interested
person with you.
Let‘s keep our material coming in for the Quarterly.
The response has been encouraging to this date for this
project. Send your family histories, Bible records,
obituaries, or any genealogical material you might have to
u.s at your earliest convenience.
I take this opportunity to express our appreciation to
Ray Adams and the Carroll EMC for allowing us to use their
nice new building for our meetings. Ray has been most
generous and cooperative in arranging our meeting place for
the last several years. Thank you!
Watch future issues of the Quarterly for the announce¬
ment of the printing date of the Carroll County Cemetery book
and the i860 Carroll County Census book.
Yours for profitable research,
Clarice S. Cox, Pres.
(Mrs. K. B. Cox)

THE FAMILY OF HENRY PHILLIPS
Henry Phillips was born March 11, 1801, in Morgan Co., Ga. He was
probably the son of Whitmell Phillips of Wilkes and Morgan Cos.,
Ga., and his wife Nancy Hurley. Whitmell was the son of Rev.
Soldier Joel Phillips of Wilkes Co. Henry named his oldest child
Whitmell and this name is carried down only in the line of Joel
Phillips' descendants. Whitmell is on the 1820 Census of Morgan
County, and he was a winner in the land lottery. Lot 166, Dist. 2,
of Walton County, granted May 1821. In March 1822, he sold all his
property in Morgan County. In 1825 Henry's name begins to appear
in the Walton County Deed Books. If Henry was the son of Whitmell,
perhaps this is the reason he went to Walton County. Henry was a
winner in the Cherokee Gold Lottery, land granted Aug. 26, 1835» in
Cherokee County, Ga.
Henry married lavinia Atkinson in Morgan County on January 30, 1821,
the daughter of Thomas Atkinson and Rhoda Ivey Atkinson. She was
born Feb. 12, 1805. Henry is not on the 1830 Census, but he appears
on the Census of Walton County in 1840 and I850, and Campbell County
in i860. In 1358 he was paying taxes on 1165 acres in Carroll,
Campbell, and Tattnall Counties. He died Sept. 20, I869, in
Campbell County, and Lavinia died Sept. 5, 1881.

MRS. YOUNG, 93, DIES MONDAY? RITES HELD AT ST. PAUL'S.
Funeral, Services for Mrs• Elizabeth R. Lizzie Young, 93, who died
Monday afternoon at her home on Whitesburg, Route 1, in the St.
Paul's Community were held Tuesday from the St. Paul's Methodist
Church with Rev. W. M. Chatham, officiating, assisted by Rev. George
Whitlock.
Mrs. Young had been ill since suffering a broken hip last
September. She was born in Carroll County, April 20, 1859, the
-63-
daughter of Gibson Edward Jennings and Jane Whitley Jennings. She
had lived where she died for the past 54 years, but during the War
Between the States she and her family were displaced persons. During
that conflict she and her family were transported to Indiana by the
Union Military and they stayed there for the duration, returning to
this section when Mrs. Young was a child of seven. She often
recounted this episode to her family telling of the trek North by
train, with the train pausing at intervals for the womenfolk to
prepare meals for the passengers along side the tracks.
Her husband James A. (Jim; Young, Justice of the Peace for over
30 years, died only 10 days before Mrs. Young, with the funeral
services held at the residence because of her broken hip. A daughter,
Alice, died at 26 and a son Edgar, died in 1934. Surviving are two
daughters, Mrs. R. C. Phillips, and Miss Odessa Young of Whitesburg,
Route 1t 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Appropriate music was rendered by the Whitesburg Ladies Trio,
Pallbearers were Watson, Selby and Burnett Phillips, Dallas and
Buford Young, and Harold Burnham. Interment was in the church
cemetery with Martin Funeral Home in Charge.
(The information in Mrs. Young's obituary was especially interesting
to me as my great great grandfather Isaac C. Wright, the father of
Ellen Virginia Wright, and his family were also displaced persons.
Mrs. Young was the mother-in-law of Robert Clifford Phillips and he
was my great uncle.) .
