Ingram, 770/429-1499, ringram@mijs.com UGA Law Professors Ron Carlson and David Shipley appointed to the newly established Foundation of Freedom Commission ATHENS, Ga. - University of Georgia School of Law Professors Ronald L. Carlson and David E. Shipley have been appointed as charter members of the State Bar of Georgia Foundation of Freedom Commission. The commission was established to promote public understanding of the law and its role in society through an educational campaign concentrating on democracy, the rule of law, the legal profession and the judicial system. State Bar of Georgia President Robert D. Ingram said it was important for the state bar to undertake this task to reawaken awareness among Georgians as to how the legal system protects their way of life and to ensure every Georgian knows his or her rights and has equal access to justice. "It is critical that members of academia join with others in the legal profession, such as judges and lawyers, to develop and implement an educational plan of this magnitude. Professors Carlson and Shipley will greatly add to this effort," Ingram said. Carlson, the Fuller E. Callaway Chair of Law Emeritus, has been a member of the Georgia Law faculty since 1984, specializing in the areas of evidence, trial practice and criminal procedure. Although he assumed partial retirement in 2001, Carlson remains a prodigious scholar and lecturer and is the author of numerous books on evidence, trial practice and criminal procedure as well as scores of articles in prominent law reviews. He lectures at continuing legal education seminars across the nation and frequently leads seminars for judges and lawyers in Georgia . Carlson also informs the public about the law and legal issues through his widely distributed commentary in the media on high-profile cases. He earned his bachelor's degree at Augustana College , his law degree at Northwestern University and his Master of Laws at Georgetown University . Shipley, the Thomas R.R. Cobb Professor of Law, joined the Georgia Law faculty in 1998 as dean, after serving as the leader of the law schools at the universities of Mississippi and Kentucky . In 2003, he assumed a full-time teaching position at Georgia offering courses in c opyright, intellectual property, administrative law, civil procedure and remedies. He is the co-author of the casebook Copyright Law: Cases and Materials and two editions of a treatise and practice manual South Carolina Administrative Law . Additionally, he writes and speaks frequently on issues regarding copyright, intellectual property and legal education at seminars and conferences in Georgia and throughout the country. Shipley earned his undergraduate degree in history with highest honors from Oberlin College and a law degree from the University of Chicago Law School, where he was executive editor of the University of Chicago Law Review . ##
