- In this series of WSB newsfilm clips from January 31, 1969, an unidentified reporter is interviewing an unidentified folklore professor about a college folklore program. The clips begin with the reporter asking about the uniqueness of offering a college course in folklore. The professor replies that it is a growing trend in the country. The professor then describes how students go out in the field and collect examples of folklore. He then plays a recording of a song called The Ballad of Mary Phagan as an example. It is sung by one of the student's mothers. The mother grew up in Fannin County Georgia, where the song became part of the local folklore. The professor describes the song as being about the murder of a little girl, Mary Phagan, by Leo Frank. The song was composed by Fiddlin' John Carson.
After playing the song, the professor describes how folklore is a means for people to salvage their roots and heritage. He then goes on to make the argument that if people better understand other groups' and ethnicities' folklore, then they could live together in better harmony.
The clips end with a series of still photographs of old houses and barns.
